. I just moved to Texas from New Jersey.
Just wanted to share a few things I have seen / done so far and the differences between here (Texas) and There (New Jersey).

The Road surfaces here are mostly Concrete - There mostly Macadam (Black Top).
Driving speed limits:
Here at least 60 just about anywhere on major roads - There only 50 in the city on the highways.
Turning to get there from where you are. Here you can turn and even in some places U turn out of the left lane - There find, what we call a Jug handle and it's always on the right. I can count on one hand the exit ramps in New Jersey that go off highways to the left lane side.
Construction projects: Here very large but broken up into parts - There very large but all one big project linked together.
Working on projects:
Here I have only seen about 5 guys working at a time on a project on the highways. And two of them are supervisors. And only one machine running at a time. There Lots of workers at the project at one time. Many working. Many leaning on shovels and not too much supervision. Those guys are back at base with radios.
Driving in general - Here getting passed every which way on the highways. Although I did pass one car - my first last night - but it was an old guy with a cardigan sweater on peering between steering wheel and dashboard. I do not count the trucks or people on the exit ramps. There would pass people all the time on the two main highways - Garden State Parkway and N.J. Turnpike. Maybe it's a speed limit or time limit thing.
Getting things: Here went to the pickup place for rooms to go last night. No one in line so to speak. Took them a 1/2 hour to get my stuff. They did not come off the loading platform. There they have things ready to go about 5 minutes after you talk to them and will help you load it up.
Prices – Here and there beer is about the same cost.
Soda here – about $9 for 36 cans – There about $12 for 24 cans.
Drinking in bar – Here soft prices $4 for premium beer – not many imports $2.50 for the domestic types. There $5 or more for the higher brands and more for imports. $3 plus for the light and regular beer types.

A few other things I need to do, or so I have been told.
1 - Get a belt with silver attached to it.
2 - Get cowboy boots. :D
3 - Get a Cowboy hat - may be optional.
4 - When out at dance clubs - Don't do the line dances only the women do those.
5 - Don't buy women drinks it ruins it for all the other guys here. Who knew....
6 - Don't try subtle humor here - you don't get it. ;)
7 – Get a pick up truck of some type – at least a Ford 150 or Chevy of some type. :)

I'll post a few more as I see things.

Hey the lightning show was spectacular last night - I'm north of Fort Worth.
3 shows at one time.
One to the South over Fort Worth - lightning in the clouds - muted flashes.
One to the North up near Denton - Lightning in big sheet flashed lit up the yard down here.
One coming directly at me from the West to East. Single bolts this and that way in the sky and into the ground.
Then the rain. I was looking for small lakes today but saw nothing of the run off.

Give it time. You will love Texas. I've lived most my life in the Bay Area, and also upstate NY and Arlington VA. My parents were both from TX, and moved back in 2001. They convinced me to come out to Austin, and I absolutely love it. I didn't care much for the weather in upstate NY, but loved the fishing. The people there were as hillbilly as it gets. Absolutely hated Arlington and Washington D.C. Loved the Bay Area, and it will always have a hold on me, but was too expensive for me as a single father raising two boys. Austin has been perfect.

Also lived in San Diego when I was a kid, but don't remember most of it. That was in the early 1970's.

When you said you were north of Ft Worth, a few things made more sense. It's fairly "cowboy" there compared to Dallas, Austin, or even most of Houston.
Ft Worth itself is a cool town though.

I could go several days in a row in Dallas without seeing a Cowboy hat or giant belt buckle. And say I see may thousands of people each day, as I work downtown. Same goes for if I'm at the Mall or taking my kid to the park or at the grocery store.

I think you're right on regarding how fast people drive. Much faster here in general vs the Northeast.

I suspect overall servcie will balance out once you're here for awhile. For examle, if you use Southwest airlines, you'll see better service.

How could you leave beloved Jersey behind and go to stinky Texas :D

Come back man, we need you here.

Kidding aside, I wish you luck on your new journey.

Did you move alone or with your family(wife and kids)

I would love to hear more about your story as I am from Northern New Jersey myself.

Where in upstate NY did you live? Yes the weather does stink but there is a saying that if you don't like it, wait a minute and it will change. I moved to the Bay area about 15 years ago and absolutely love the weather. If I want snow I can drive to it.

I have always liked Texas, .. I could see me moving there and liking it.

I love the state flag with the big star on it, and of course I love the Cowboys.

I love westerns and cowboy movies, .. in my mind they were all in Texas. :D

Always enjoyed the Texas Rangers in TV shows and movies. (Chuck Norris)

And of course my avatar is the Lone Ranger.

I have only been to Texas once, .. business trip to Dallas. While there I also went up to Witchita Falls to go to training camp.

Yep, I'm pretty sure I would like living in Texas, .. for a while anyways.

West Virginia is home though.

I lived in Catskill for the most part, and Coxsackie for a while.

Is that some of the subtle humor you were talking about?

Welcome to Texas. Liking the weather? How many people have you talked to from NJ that were concerned if you were okay or not since last night?

Fort Worth is a great town, but there is a ton to explore and do all over DFW. It's basically a small state... roughly the same size as New Jersey but not as many people.

We'll see how the "100 days of 100 degree heat" go over.

I was born in Wichita Falls, lived there twice when I was young. I don't remember a lot about it but my parents (my father was in the Air Force) couldn't wait to get outta that blast furnace.

I was there for a year and a half (football at Midwestern). The heat there is NOTHING compared to the heat in Laredo.

Something I noticed up there was that Bills fans were the biggest blowhards in the world. Jets fans kept their mouths shut for the most part, and would only admit to being Jets fans if you asked them. Giants fans were pretty mellow, and great to talk too. I was there when Landry was fired, and they seemed to be more mad about it than I was. Maybe because Landry is a former Giant? At the same time many of them were also saying Walsh was a better QB than Aikman, so they really aren't that wise.

Yea, that's what I was thinking, ... coming from WV, I'm not going to start wearing cowboy boots and cowboys hats, ... that's just not me.
