I saw a thread the yesterday about the opposing offenses 3rd downs and I decided to do a little research (seehttp://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171533 ). I went through all thirteen games using NFL’s game book and came up with the following. Yesterday, someone said they heard a caller call in to a radio show stating the Cowboys gave up 24 first downs on 3rd and 10 or longer. Here is what I found. Given the times I cringe on 3rd and long I am amazed that the percent is that low. I would like to know what the other team’s percentages are, but I’m too lazy to do that research. Maybe if Adam or someone else knows a site that has that breakdown I would like to know where we fall.
An interesting note in the KC game they had 11 3rd and 10+. KC converted 2.

Down……….total attempts……….attempts made……….attempts failed……….percent made……….percent failed
3rd and 1……….14………………………………10………………………………4……………………………..71.4%.....................28.6%
3rd and2……….10……………………………….8……………………………….2……………………………..80.0%......................20.0%
3rdand3……….12……………………………….5………………………………..7……………………………..41.7%......................58.3%
3rd and4……….14………………………………7…………………………………7……………………………..50.0%......................50.0%
3rd and5………18……………………………….6………………………………..12…………………………….33.3%......................66.7%
3rd and6………21……………………………….7………………………………..14…………………………….33.3%......................66.7%
3rd and7………11……………………………….3…………………………………8……………………………….27.3%.....................72.7%
3rd and8….…11………………………………8…………………………………3……………………………….72.7%......................27.3%
3rd and9………12……………………………….0…………………………………12……………………………..0.0%........................100%
3rd and10……62………………………………14…………………………………48………………………………22.6%.....................77.4%
If anyone wants the detailed breakdown of the 3rd downs by game send me a pm and I’ll send them to you along with the excel spreadsheet I used. I included 3rd and goal situations since those are still made of failed attempts. I threw out one third down due to the fact the packers kicked a field goal on third down to end the half. I also included penalties on the offense and defense as made or failed attempts. I would have discounted a penalty if the defense committed a penalty but did not result in a first down, but there have been none that occurred so far.

What really caught my eye is that about half the third down attempts are third and ten or longer. I thought most attempts would be third and five or less.

...the bigger problem for Dallas right now is the fact that they can't convert third downs on offense...they were 1-8 against the Chargers...this deficiency in third down conversion rate has haunted the Cowboys all season, obscured by the big plays on first and second down...however once they meet a good defense it shows and has shown...that along with red-zone deficiency has probably cost this team two games...no the defense is'nt that great but there was a time when the offense could generate enough points to overcome it...that time has passed...

That sig pic is a bit distracting, but I'll find a way to get through it. :)

Anyway, that doesn't look near as bad as some in here would have you believe. 3rd and 9 is the answer.

Great research, first of all. I know it takes a long time to do that stuff, so you really have to love the team, have a lot of patience, and an appreciation of the importance of getting things straight. And the time to do it of course.

Unless I misread you, aren't the third-and-tens closer to one-third than one-half? Maybe the table you made doesn't include the "or longer's."

Hah, seriously. I tried to watch the game live but everytime they threw one of them up on the video board i was...distracted. Those Santa outfits or whatever are awesome.

good research. what I get out of the stats, that in passing situations we give up first downs about 27% of the time. that would be 3rd and 6 and longer.

what would be more interesting is compare the stats by quarter. 1st quarter may not be as urgent, but when you have to get a stop in the 4th are we doing it?
