I get tired of being told I'm out of my mind when some of Jerry Jones' comments chap the dog out of me (i.e., really aggravate me).
Here is an excellent GM that just finished guiding an organization to the highest level of competition. They fell short, but he did an excellent job.
Jon Daniels: "We won't sign anybody who would come in expecting to close for us," Daniels said Wednesday. "The only way Feliz wouldn't close is if he demonstrates he's ready to start for us and we decide that's the way we're going to go. We are interested in a few of the relievers out there, but you won't see us bringing anybody under the pretense that they're going to close for us. Could it work out that way if that's the way Wash and the staff ultimately decides if we as an organization deem Feliz to be our best option in the rotation, then somebody could compete for that role. But there is Ogando and Frank Francisco and Mark Lowe."
That part I have highlighted is the part glaringly absent in MOST of Jerry Jones' comments. He doesn't defer to his head coach and the coaching staff.
Now, does it actually OPERATE the way the Rangers do? Hos and others say it does, and they are probably in a better position to know that than I am. So I will defer to them and say, ok, Jerry lets his coaches coach. Fine.
Nonetheless it would be good for him to sound like Daniels sounds here. If it is the truth, if the coaches evaluate and make decisions about player roles, then why not say it? Just one time I would like to here Jerry say, "whatever the head coach decides."
