Potential 1st-round pick McKinley needs shoulder surgery, will miss 4-6 months
Mitch Sanderson Mar 4, 2017 3:20 PM
UCLA edge-rushing prospect Takkarist McKinley will compete at the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, but he won't be at 100 percent.

The potential first-round pick told reporters Saturday he'll undergo surgery on his shoulder Monday, and will be out four-to-six months, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.

McKinley said there's a torn labrum in his shoulder, as well as a fracture in the socket that he suffered in a 2015 game against Arizona State.

"My agent asked if anything was wrong with me, and I said I had a shoulder that was sometimes bothering me," he said. "I had an MRI and the doctor was pretty much amazed I had played with it. Me, I just told my trainers at UCLA, 'Just tape me up I'm ready to go.'"

Despite playing through the injuries in his last two seasons, he still produced 10 sacks in 2016, and didn't give a second thought to competing at the combine.

"Why get surgery before the combine? This is a dream come true to me," said McKinley. "I'm here to knock it out."

That would truly be a miracle if we could get him in the 2nd. Trade down from 28 only way it happens.

I wrote the title somewhat in jest. But he will fall out of the first round.

I can see it but are you prepared for minimal impact in the first season? he wont even practice till the season starts and probably will miss the first 6 games.I dont nkwo if we cant afford that this season.

Another guy who won't play next season. That's just what we need.

Yup.... Injured. TE. Character issue.

He's a cowboys type of 2nd round pick!

That's the rub. The injury may give us a chance to nab him, while normally he would have likely gone much higher. On the other hand, he will be lucky to be ready for training camp and the dude is raw IMHO and this is at a position that usually does not make a big impact in the first year. 2 or 3 years down the road, I would not be surprised to see him as the best pass rusher from this draft, but he will not help much this year, if at all.

Didn't Collins miss most of training camp?

you guys can't be serious...... another injured/project DE
What makes him a project? And he'll play week 1 more than likely. 6 months puts him right before week 1. If you heard his story you know he doesn't need motivation to stay ready. He's hungry

9. Takk is banged up but not letting that stop him
“I’m here to get to the quarterback.”

That’s how the media session with UCLApass rusher Takkarist McKinley started, and he wasn’t shy to share his thoughts about where he belongs in this class.

“It’s a passing league and they need young guys who can get to the quarterback,” McKinley said. “And I feel I’m the best in the class to do that.”

McKinley shows on tape that he can beat blockers, but the main concern with his projection and draft grade is health. He plans to have surgery on Monday to repair a torn right labrum and fractured glenoid (broken bone of the shoulder socket). McKinley also revealed that it isn’t a new injury.

“My thing is, I played with this injury for two years, dating back to 2015, my junior year. Never knew something was wrong with it,” McKinley said. “I played with it my entire senior year; never knew anything was wrong with it.

“One day my agents asked if anything was wrong with me. I said I have a shoulder that sometimes bothers me so I got an MRI and the doctor was amazed that I played with it. And me, I told the trainers at UCLA to tape me up; ‘I’m ready to go.’ So why get surgery before the combine? This is a dream come true for me, I’m here to knock it out.”
McKinley expects the injury and rehab to span four-to-six months. But just like he played through the issue the past two seasons, he plans to do every drill at the combine, including the bench press.

“I’m not the type to complain,” McKinley said. “Everyone in the NFL is injured. Everyone in college is injured. I wasn’t going to let no injury stop me.”

Doesn't sound like someone who is a project to me.

Our history of taking chances hasn't been very good, but I'd consider him. I get him trying to prove that he belongs but he really should have had the surgery already.

Are you new to DAL................ 6months = 12 months ....no one ever gets better

He won't be our second round pick. That is going to be Mixon RB Oklahoma if he is stilll there at #60.
