I've got it figured out.
It pretty much boils down to this team has no fear of BP.
They like him. They like he has the credentials.
They like the fact that he deflects an enormous amount of pressure from them, being that he gets most of the media attention..etc.
But the players have no fear that he'll bench them. They little fear he'll cut them.
Because this year, like last year, BP is a lameduck HC with rumor flying that he'll leave after the season.
The players would be much more concerned with their starting jobs or spot on the team if these constant rumors were not flying that this is his last season.
If the players believed that BP would be around 2-3 more years and that he wasn't just in it for this year and a SB run..they'd be much more concerned with their futures in Dallas.
But they aren't. We can see how they are playing. They are making way too many mistakes and nobody except Bledsoe has been benched.
Last year, we all know BP was very close to gone, the players knew it. He has come back for one more run, the players know it.
All the players, save for guys like Bledsoe and TO, know they will probably be here long after BP has cleaned out his office in January.
So what you have with these players is no sense of urgency. No sense of playing like their jobs depended on it. Or that winning is all that matters.
They have next year. And a fresh start with the next coach.
BP isn't going to start throwing clipboards or threaten them with benching or cuts. He isn't getting mad. He isn't showing any signs of taking action about this teams play.
Because he's not going to be here 8 games from now.
And the team is showing no urgency about it either.
This is typical of a team that knows there is a change coming.
They'll play, but not with complete committment. And they are playing with no fear.
I remember very well the Jimma Johnson days.
There was a guy that could make the biggest, meanest player on the team fear for his job if he didn't produce.
BP hasn't done that. I have heard so much about players in the past being so afraid of BP and how tough he was with them.
I don't really see this myself with BP and this team.
I see a guy who is guarding his emotions, probably for his own well-being, and not being the BP of old. I think we all expected a lot more firey HC when he came, but he's a different coach here.
And his stay here has been laced with rumors of short-time committment to this team.
It's been dogging this team for the last two years now.
So I don't think this team is going to play for BP. They are playing for themselves, many of them have signed nice, fat, contracts since the off-season and they aren't worried about next year too much.
They'll be here. BP won't.
But they will owe BP alot for what he's done for them.
Too bad they aren't committed enough to repay him.
