Based on the recent gushing over Bryce Petty that the Cowboys "talent evaluators" are doing, I think he's gonna be selected in either the 2nd or 3rd round. Groomed to take over in 2017 after Romo "retires".

Maybe. He's got the tools.

For my part, I'd rather have a more polished guy to develop if we're taking him that high. We've already got a young player with all the tools who needs a lot of work in Vaughan, and Petty, I think, would require a significant investment in time and reps to get him where you want him to be under his rookie contract. But you're right that he seems to be a name that's getting leaked a lot for Dallas in the lead up to the draft.

Question is Petty worth taking a chance at in the early rounds of this draft? Have no ideal about the pros and cons of Petty because I haven't watch a lot of Baylor football but is he worth taking in this draft?

How good is his ball placement on short, medium, and deep routes? I get the Baylor/Texas connection and why some Cowboy fans would like to have him but is he really worth taking in this years draft, when Romo is coming off one of this most productive seasons with the team to sit on the bench for atleast 2+ years?

There was a time when every QB drafted sat for 2, 3, and sometimes 4 years before getting the keys to the car.

Perhaps this lack of waiting to develop has contributed to so many crappy QB's in this league.

Anybody have informed opinions of his ability?

Has the tools, but played in as spread as a spread offense can be. Needs to learn how to take snaps under consistently. Also his ability to read defenses will basically need to be completely taught at this level. The windows he was throwing into at Baylor were even larger than Mariota at Oregon. Like Mariota, he will have to learn a playbook for the first time as well. From what I've seen, throwing over the middle is troublesome. Personally I question his ability to be accurate enough at the next level. He is a very natural thrower. The ball usually comes out very nice. He's big and strong, with plenty of arm.

Basically he will need to learn how to be an NFL QB and his ability to throw into NFL windows is going to have to be projected. He has all of the tools, but imo he's a project and will need a couple of years on the bench at least and still may not pan out. Thats my take on him. I wouldn't touch him before the 4th-5th rd.

Trying to create competition up and down the roster. I'd pass on him until later with accuracy and scheme concerns. .....but I'd like Carson wentz next year

Petty's young and can possibly develop some but his profile says he puts too many balls up for grabs. Perhaps that can be reconciled to some extent but it'll take time. The CBS Sports draft profile describes him as a more athletic Brandon Weeden and that scares the tar out of me. I hope we wait 'til next year and use a couple of those comp picks we'll get to trade for a higher pick. This year really isn't a good year for QBs anyhow.

Thanks for the replies.

I saw him play a coupla times and came away indifferent.

A 7th round/UDFA guy I like a ton is Chris Bonner, CSU-Pueblo.

Judging by RGIII's development, I'll say no thank you (in any round). Also remember that although Petty has some tools, he isn't nearly the athlete that RGIII is. And if we take him, he's going to be carrying the clipboard for a few seasons (which is a good thing). That being the case I'd rather roll the dice on a late round pick like a Chris Bonner and spend the 2nd (that would be required in taking Petty) on any other position.

Unfortunately ya can't trade compensatory picks. :(

You say he throws the ball up for grabs? Mebbe he's the next Eli!

I would be kinda pissed if they take Petty at all, but especially with a high pick this year. And that would signal that Jerry does not believe that Romo has 4-5 years left. Petty would be in his final year/option year by that time and would cost big money - so no.
It will be a good barometer of where they really see the QB position if they pick up any QB in this years draft.

Yea, big Bonner fan. Physically has as much upside as any QB in this class. He'll just need time which is fine because Romo's not going anywhere for a while.

Ouch -- forgot about the comp picks not being eligible for trades. I'd rather wait 'til 2016 and take a lesser risk.

Sorry but I don't see it,he doesn't have the mental capacity to make NFl throws and process info to go through progessions and may never have it.
