1. Patrick Peterson-Cornerback
Stats:
2008- 41 tackles, 1 INT, 3 pass defenses
2009- 47 tackles, 2 INTs, 15 pass defenses
Pros:
Let’s make this simple; Patrick Peterson is the best cover corner in college football. Peterson utilizes his good athletic ability and high football IQ to have a major impact on the field. At 6-1 211lbs he has good size which allows him to match up with different types of receivers. He has excellent top end speed and uses that speed to lock down the opposing team’s top receiver. Last season he held Georgia’s AJ Green to 4 catches and Alabama’s Julio Jones to 3 catches, both players are in the top 5 on our 2011 Big Board. Peterson boasts great awareness that allows him to react quickly on balls in the air. That excellent awareness also comes into play in zone coverages.
Cons:
Peterson doesn’t have a lot of cons, but there are a few things he could improve on. He needs to continue to work on his back pedal because he sometimes crosses his feet which puts him out of position on plays. The other thing that’s a minor concern is experience. He has only started 16 games and hasn’t been tested a lot because of his superior skills. Teams will often work the opposite side of the field. So Peterson needs to have a healthy season and continue to get reps.
Thoughts:
There is little doubt that Peterson will be one of the top cornerbacks this season. He will continue to work against top competition in the SEC which will only enhance his NFL readiness. He is ranked #4 on our Big Board.
Projected Round:
Peterson will be a top 5 pick if he chooses to enter next year’s NFL Draft. He is the best cornerback prospect in the country. The fact that Joe Haden went #7 overall only solidifies my stance on Peterson, who is a lot better prospect than Haden.
2.DeAndre McDaniel-Safety
6-1 210lbs Senior
Stats:
2007- 33 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2 INTs, 5 pass breakups
2008- 68 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 INT, 3 forced fumbles
2009- 98 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 8 INT, 1 forced fumble
Pros:
DeAndre McDaniel had a very successful Junior season but decided to return to Clemson. McDaniel has good size and excellent speed. He utilizes those abilities to constantly be around the ball making plays. McDaniel spends countless hours studying game film which he uses on game day. All the film preparation and his physical abilities helped him lead the ACC with 8 interceptions last season. Another major strength of McDaniel’s is his ability to quickly diagnose plays and put himself in perfect position to make a play. McDaniel is a versatile safety; he has the speed to be a centerfielder but also possesses the toughness to play in the box. He displayed his ability to support the run by playing a full season at linebacker.
Cons:
It was a good idea for McDaniel to return to Clemson for his Senior season. While he had a really good Junior year he still needs more game experience at the safety position. The more time spent learning the position the easier the transition to the NFL will be. The biggest issue with McDaniel is his questionable character. He was arrested for assault and the circumstances were not very pretty. NFL teams will be closely watching McDaniel and another slip could cost him.
Thoughts:
McDaniel is our top rated safety and sits at #15 on our 2011 NFL Draft Big Board. His combination of size, athletic ability, and football IQ make him a very dangerous player. The safety position has become increasingly important in the NFL and McDaniel hopes to cash in
