Here's why Dak Prescott's transition from college to the Cowboys is going so well

Maybe it should have been more obvious. Because according Prescott, in an interview with CBS Sports for the latest edition of the Roughing the Passer Podcast (subscribe on iTunes here), the playbook in Dallas is surprisingly similar to his playbook at Mississippi State and it's a misconception that what he ran with the Bulldogs is different than what he runs with the Cowboys.

"Our passing game in college was pretty much the exact same that it is in the NFL. The only difference is I go under center sometimes. I was very fortunate to come in and get the playbook and just look at the plays and being able to connect them to plays we ran in college. So that worked well for me. Working from under center, doing things I wasn't asked to do in college, is just a testament to how hard my coaches -- Coach [Jason] Garrett, Coach [Scott] Linehan, Coach [Wade] Wilson -- from the time I got here, just planting the things in my head that I need to focus on getting back away from center, staying balanced in my throws ... great coaching."

Prescott, who appeared on behalf of Buffalo Wild Wings for his work with the Boys & Girls Club of America (see video below), also said flatly that "lot of our plays now are plays we ran at Mississippi State" and pointed to a crossover between Mullen and his current offensive coordinator Linehan.

As it turns out, the similarities should have been more obvious. According to Urban Meyer, in a 2012 interview with 11 Warriors, he and Mullen, back when Meyer was the wide receivers coach for Notre Dame, went and studied John L. Smith and Linehan's offense at Louisville.

Meyer said he was "enamored" with the offense.

Come on Dak that can't be. They are incapable to teaching a young QB.

Ha, C'mon Dak, don't blow this for me. For 5 years I've said Garrett can't coach and now you're saying he can.

All joking aside, I have not been a fan of Garrett's coaching. But to have Dak come in and play the way he has then I am happy to eat crow on everything I said about Garrett. Garrett has done a fantastic job developing this man and he also has done a great job with dealing with injuries. Also, and this I never thought I would say, is Garrett has done a good job adjusting his system to help Dak out. If we continue winning I think Garrett should be in the running for coach of the year. And I remind everyone that I am not a Garrett fan.

Helps when you got some talent to work with. These guys are not video games the coach is controlling, they can help a player but come game time they have to go out and actually do the work.

If I had to vote on coach of the year right now with no bias involved at this stage of the season I would have to say Mike Zimmer however we still got a ways to go.

The young man said he lucked out. Fate does appear very favorable for his career (or at least early on).

Is this the thing where they didn't develop McGee or any of the retreads again? Yeah, remember that? Not so much anymore, I guess.

Pretty much. Hey a lot of credit goes to Dak he is soaking this information up, he is putting in the time he needs to, to learn and to develop. You take Blaine Gabbert, as Aikman said you watch him in practice and he looks sharp he steps out on the field and does not seem to be able to function the same way. Game day you got to be able to think on the fly as opposed to controlled environment. Dak is being able to take that information and apply on game day with few mistakes.

There are many variables that come into play for a coach (team) to be successful. It's never as simple as some people make it out to be. Good coaches don't become dumb overnight. Bad coaches don't become brilliant overnight. A successful Head Coach will have talented players, front office support, and good assistants. That's certainly not to say that the Head Coach, himself, doesn't need to be talented, but without the players and support system, most will fail. With those things, most will succeed. Garrett is not a bad coach. I know that those that think clapping equates to bad coaching will disagree with me, but that's my worthless opinion.

I'd heard that Linehan (and Wilson) really wanted Dak back in April. Makes sense now.

He and JG would certainly have to be the top two. JG has dealt with more injuries, but I wouldn't be able to argue against Zim, either.

He is still a rookie and 23 ,If we build the Defense around him then we have a shot at no 6.

He's running the simplest offense in the NFL. But he's doing it well.

But can he win a game on his own like Romo when the situation requires?

Learning while standing in the pocket instead of running for your life has to be great. It doesnt hurt to be handing the ball off to ~the best rb in the league. A ton of us said this when romo got hurt...dak walked into arguably the best situation a rookie qb has ever walked into...and hes taking advantage of it. You can see him growing each week.

It's about talent . Dak has more than any other QB we've tried to develop under this coaching staff.

NFL is a talent driven league . Talent trumps all!!

We hit on two very talented players. It happens .

Garrett will get his due with the team he's influenced building when the success comes.

There's two key pieces which are different from last years debacle. That makes all the difference.

If this wave continues the NFL will recognize everyone more than some of our own fans are because there are deeply rooted agendas amongst us on both sides of the debate.
