Here's why Dez Bryant is the real problem for the Dallas Cowboys

We all know Dez isn't able to create much seperation. Could it just be that Dak isn't as comfortable as Romo was throwing to Dez when he is tightly covered?

I built a whole thread on that 4 or 5 weeks ago.

Dez gets separation. His routes are more reserved for routes where the QB has to anticipate the throw. He may not be open mid-route or even 3/4 of the route, but if the QB anticipates, he'll be open. This is really that last frontier that a QB has to go before becoming elite...consistently anticipating throws. This is why Dez was so good with Romo because anticipation is one of Tony's strongsuits. And Tony isn't exactly a precision passer on the deep ball.

I wouldn't confuse Dez with Steve Largent when it comes to running routes...but plenty of top notch receivers are not the best route runners. Calvin Johnson certainly wasn't, but at 6'6" and 240 pounds, he didn't need to be.

Where Dez struggles is in the more little things like hand placement to fight off jams and when the DB is engaged, using his footwork, etc. I can see why the staff is on him about practicing because he gets rusty in those areas without practice time. Probably the thing that stood out to me was the long pass that Dak made to him that Dez caught in the Minny game. He should have walked in for a TD, instead he made a small stutter step and misjudged the ball. He caught it, but he fell over because he lost his balance. That's something that Dez wouldn't do in previous years and it made an easy catch look pretty discombobulated.

YR

If you look over the course of Dez's career...he's caught a lot of balls with guys draped over him...and a more modest amount when he's really achieved separation. If he gets wide open it's usually because of a breakdown on defense or a fake in play-action.

So Dez played well with Romo, great chemistry, tore the league up from 2012 to 2014. A new QB comes in, and the "lack" of production is on Dez, not the rookie QB...

The truth, as is always the case in any relationship, lies somewhere in the middle.

Let's not pretend all these passes were catchable. Dak can be all over the place with his throws.

The challenge with Dez is that a quarterback can't always trust him to be where he should be on a route...and perhaps as importantly *when* he should get to the ideal target area.

What takes a passing game over the top is when it can be based on precision timing. Look at all those Patriot receivers and how effective they are...it's because they get to their spots and do it on time. Over and over again.

That's not correct. There are other QB-WR combinations with a lower catch percentage (including Dak to Brice Butler) and many other receivers with a lower catch percentage between multiple quarterbacks.

Sounds like someone is jealous he isn't Michael Lombardi.

For those who don't know...Lombardi is a very well respected football mind and a crazy smart guy.

Mike’s one of the smartest people I know,” Belichick said. “He’s one of the smartest people I’ve worked with. He was a huge asset to me for the two years he was here. Mike’s a smart guy and he studies football and he knows it very well.”
-Bill Belichick, November 2016
If you think the guy has an agenda, Adam, how about you man up and tell us your grand conspiracy theory.

It's a talk show so Michael was speaking short-hand. No, the Dak-Dez combo isn't the lowest percentage pair in all football...but that combo is in the bottom 10% of those with significant passing volume.

If someone does have an agenda in this discussion...I don't think it's Lombardi.

Dez got paid and hasnt been the same as he was in 2014, and may never be again.
He was a intense player till he got paid.
Now he just shows up and plays, maybe good maybe bad. not worth the money he is getting.

What does Lombardi have to do with anything I said?

I didn't say anything about Lombardi or what Lombardi said.

If you're going to attack someone, you should at least know what's going on.

He got paid. Yes. To be fair though, he also lost his QB. There's a trust with Romo that is impossible to be matched by Prescott
based solely on time together. Not hatin' on Dak at all here. They just aren't going to be on the same page very often until next
season. I expect they will spend time working together in the offseason.

Its the medias job to over analyze, that's what they get payed to do, some buy in to it.
Step outside the box and you can see clearer,, the Giants secondary played about as perfect a game as a secondary can,, its really that simple, they beat our WRs hands down when it mattered the most and we lost by 3 points.
Good teams loose in this league, and Dallas needs to take care of business this Sunday vs Tampa.
Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Detroit beat the Giants, back on track.

Talk about twisting the stats to fit the narrative. This is "the worst full season of his career" although he has played in only 10 games, which means that last year's nine games and his rookie year's 12 games are not counted as a "full season," but 10 games is. And he's not on pace for "his worst season in total yards and receptions since his rookie campaign in 2010" because he already surpassed his total yards and receptions from 2015. And he'd had more yards per game than he did in 2011, he just missed three games.

Did Dez have a bad game Sunday? Of course. Could he play better than he has so far this season? Of course. But twisting or flatly misstating the numbers serves no purpose except to deceive.
Lol, there goes those irritating facts that blows up someone's narrative. Thanks for posting this AdamJT13. I love facts over biased narratives. It's easy to get emotional and irrational with biased narratives.

Dez had a bad game, Dak had a bad game. I do think Romo is better for Dez then Dak is but I'm not ready to say for absolute certain that Romo should start. There were plenty of games were Dak and Dez looked good together. By no means is Dez our biggest problem.

I'll say it once or a 100 times, our biggest problem is we lost for the first time since opening day and we're simply not used to losing. We'll be alright. We got 3 games to get this ironed out and we will and we will make a run in the playoffs.

I got faith. I got faith in Dez, Dak, Romo, Elliott and the offensive line and the defense. You don't win 11 straight without being a great team.

Then we'll have a huge division between McFadden fanatics and Zeke lovers.

I'm not sure who's side I'm going to pick. Maybe McFadden cuz he broke his back or arm or something trying to save his iPhone and I like apple products.

But seriously tho, this is the crabbiest 11-2 fan base in the history of sports. Some cats need to lighten up.

Same guy who used his numbers to try an prove Roy Williams was a good safety when anybody with functioning eyes could see wasn't?

Dez had a bad catch rate last season, even in the last two games Romo played in.
