Herm Edwards thinks Jason Garrett should keep calling plays

By Brad Biggs | National Football Post – 51 minutes ago

The identity of the offensive play caller for the Dallas Cowboys remains a bit of a mystery.
Right after the season ended, owner Jerry Jones said head coach Jason Garrett would be giving up that part of his job. It looked like Bill Callahan would be the guy. Now, it’s in limbo with Garrett pointing out no decision needs to be made any time soon.
He’s right about that. And now former NFL head coach Herm Edwards, an analyst for ESPN, says Garrett should continue wearing the hat of play caller.
“If I’m Jason Garrett, I’m calling the plays. That’s Jason Garrett’s strength,” Edwards said on KESN-FM, according to the Dallas Morning News. “That’s what he does. That’s why he was hired, because he was a good play-caller. Let’s not lose sight of that now.
“By the way, he is the head coach. I get to call the shots. Now what’s Jerry going to do, fire him because he wants to call the plays, ‘OK, then fire me. I’m calling the plays.’”
When Jones wants something within the Cowboys organization, he gets it. So, the guess here is Garrett eventually hands over the play calling. But you never know and Garrett ultimately could have the final say in what could turn into a full blown power struggle

Amusing that nobody in the media is taking Jerry at his word that he doesn't have a preference one way or another as to who calls the plays and that it's Jason's decision, afterall. They don't even bother to qualify it with 'despite what Jerry might say.' It's just assumed he was lying about how the decision went down, and that JG was lying in his own right about it being up in the air.

If Garrett wants to protect his longevity, he makes someone else the playcaller. Coordinators are often fired, keeping the head coach. Even Jimmy Johnson went through coordinators on his way to Norv for the offense.

But when you ARE the playcaller for a part that doesn't work, you get fired sooner.

I would certainly understand JG giving up the playcalling for job security and in order to do a better job managing the games because he's run out of free passes on mismanaging clock and game situations/decisions; however, if he is confident and truly believes in himself as the playcaller who can also be the headcoach on the sidelines, then I hope he will man-up and continue.

Maybe because it is so obvious?

It does not take a rocket surgeon to figure this one out IMO.

I really don't know who would really take what he, Jerry, is selling on this specific point...nobody with a straight face anyway.

One, Herm is thinking of how most football teams are run, not this one.

Two, Garrett obviously did not think that. Turning down about 10 million bucks out of pride is a lot easier said than done.

Herm, a lot like Jerry, likes to hear the sound of his own voice. But like the dog barking, just to bark, it doesn't often mean much.

Not like you don't see it in the fan base either.....

if jason was even considering calling plays this year, having Herm think he should, should convince him of the idiocy of his decision

I don't bother to even try to interpret what Jerry says, most of the time. But it still says something when the media pretty much universally disregards the press conference transcripts to conclude the opposite.

And I, for one, don't think it's that obvious what's gone on re: play calling. I expect JG really enjoys doing it, and thinks he's good at it. But I also expect he sees that there are/were other areas of the team that could have benefitted from his oversight. JG's strength is in organization and clear communicating. I can see how him being a walk-around HC might have helped some of what was going on last year on defense and/or teams. Especially with all the injuries and the plugging in of street FA.

Now, with the hiring of Kiffin, will that still be the case? Should we expect him to even know yet where his time is going to need to be best spent? It might turn out that he expects to spend more time with the other units and less on offense, but he thinks there might be a chance that that's not necessary since Kiffin and Marinelli might be able to handle it. And, if he ends up not having to commit so much time to the other units, he can continue to call the offensive plays, after all.

Who knows what's really going on. I don't pretend to. I just don't think the dynamic between Jerry and Garrett is so simplistic it boils down to 'Jerry is obviously lying and Jason is clearly toothless.' I know it's an easy shorthand interpretation of the evidence, but it's not the only possible explanation of what's going on. Not even the most likely, frankly, since it's so simplistic and relies on all of the team's decision makers basically acting like cartoon characters.
