How is this a big deal? They weren't against the rules then and I agree that the Cowboys probably had just as many players on them as every other team.

Is this some how going to take the sting out of those Superbowl losses, or something? I can't see how the Cowboys, who had players on roids, losing to the Steelers who had players on roids, is any less of a loss just because Terry admits it.

I wonder if Steelers fans are all out there talking about the coke use some of our players had during that time.

Who said all of that? You're being a bit presumptuous. Bradshaw opened his big mouth, so of course people are going to comment. I haven't read anything about the "sting" of losing from anyone but you.

Terry Bradshaw admits using steroids in '70s
QB of four Steelers championship teams did it to for 'speed of healing'
By Sporting News staff reports
The Sporting News
updated 12:44 p.m. ET, Tues., June. 24, 2008

Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw admitted that he took steroids while playing football in the 1970s, according to several reports.

Bradshaw said on The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday, "We did steroids to get away the aches and the speed of healing. My use of steroids from a doctor was to speed up injury, and I thought nothing of it. ... It was to speed up the healing process, that was it. It wasn't to get bigger and stronger and faster."

SN contributor Mike Florio writes on profootballtalk.com that the story of Bradshaw's admission has received very little attention despite the scrutiny currently surrounding the use of performance enhancing drugs in all sports.

Florio writes, "When Pats safety Rodney Harrison was popped last year for possession of HGH, he claimed he wasn't cheating because he was only doing it to recover from an injury -- ignoring the obvious reality that using banned substances to speed recovery from an injury is simply another form of cheating."

The New York Daily News reports that it was unclear whether Bradshaw was referring to corticosteroids or anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids are given to many athletes and non-athletes in the form of cortisone shots to promote healing. Cortisone shots are legal and allowed per NFL rules and other leagues' substance policies. Anabolic steroids are not allowed by leagues.

Bradshaw suffered neck, wrist and elbow injuries during his career and retired after suffering an elbow injury near the end of the 1983 season.

Several Steelers players from the 1970s have admitted to using steroids, including the late Steve Courson, whom Bradshaw mentioned in the interview with Patrick, according to the Daily News report. Courson described to Sports Illustrated how he used Anadrol-50, Dianabol, Winstrol and Deca Durobilin while playing.

Bradshaw is a four-time Super Bowl champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, three-time Pro Bowl selection and 1978 NFL MVP. He finished his 14-year career with 27,989 passing yards and 212 passing touchdowns. He also had 32 rushing touchdowns.

It wasn't against the rules and there wasn't the ''stigma" that they could really hurt you, so i bet very few didn't consider it when injured.

Exactly, they weren't even illegal until the 80s (I think?). I know some old powerlifters have told me that back in the day most guys took them. If a doc would prescribe them, there was absolutely nothing illegal, immoral, or unethical about taking them.

Of course, my impression is that other than a few freaks like Alzado, they didn't pump themselves to the gills with them, either. They took more of the clinical dose, which is very small compared to what lots of people do now.

What's news worth about this? Is there anyone out there that doesn't know the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 70s were notorious for their steroid use? Mike Webster died because of it. Terry just confirmed what we already knew.
It is not a big deal because it is old news:starspin

The 4 time sb qb publicly admitting he used roids is NOT old news dude

So what. They were legal then. And, ironically, far more dangerous.

That is ironic. Why would they have been more dangerous?

No, but I bought and sold a few emu eggs on the gray market back in the 70's.

While Bradshaw isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, at least he was honest. I suspect that, even back then, roids were rampant. The viewing public simply does not seem to care.

Not to totally change the subject but I'm a Mets fan and Keith Hernandez talks about "greenies" and how rampant amphetamines were back in the 70s/80s among MLB players. Drugs and their relationship with sports were much different back then.

Not as well developed as they are now. Less medical knowledge about their use.

Interesting. I went to HS with one of his sons in Texas. Different mom, I'm sure. There were some issues there and they didn't talk about him much...at all.

Well, if that is news to you, let me burst another bubble for you. Lawrence Taylor, the HOF linebacker for the Giants in the 80s, was a cocaine addict.

I don't know how much football you watched in the 70s and 80s, but the "Steroid Steelers" were well known to all. But like others have said, roids were not illegal back then.:)

Analgesic steroids vs. anabolic steroids. Big difference. The ointment you by over the counter to treat poison ivy is a steroid. Many asthmatics use steroid inhalers. Steroid is a class of drug. Just like antibiotic is a class of drug.

The danger in analgesic steroids is that they reduce swelling and inflamation, but don't treat the cause of the symptoms. They jsut allow you to go out and further injure the problem area.

I took analgesic steroids for an elbow injury will pitching minor league baseball. That was back in the day when you played hurt and hid injuries. If you admitted to being hurt, you would be reminded of Wally Pipp. The steroids kept me throwing, but ruined my elbow. All the synovial lining in my elbow was worn away causing bone chips. To this day I still can't straighten my right arm completely.

Analgesic steroids are not a cure, just a mask. They let you play when you shouldn't. Bradshaw played in the day when you were expected to play hurt. I actually think more of him for having played with the pain.
