Well after 30 years of rooting for the Boys, I finally will get to see them at their house. I have been a fan for over 30 years and have been to see them play in Philly, New York and Washington many times. I became a fan at the age of twelve in 1977 after the Boys drafted Tony Dorsett. You see a year earlier I had an inauspicious encounter with T.D. as he ran over me on the sidelines of the Pitt – Temple game at Veterans’ Stadium.
I was on the sidelines because a few weeks earlier I suffered an appendicitis attack while attending my brothers’ practice who was a linebacker for the Temple Owls. So coach Hardin made me a team mascot for that game. At the game I was playing catch with coach Hardin’s son when he over through me with the ball landing near the sideline. While retrieving the ball the next thing I know is that I’m eating grass. I was picked up by the player who ran me over while being tackled on the sideline. He asked me was I alright and patted me on the head then ran back to the huddle.
The following year my brother took me to my first NFL game. It was the Boys against the Eagirls. After T.D. broke off a 60 yard run, my brother informed me that was the player that knocked me down. He told me his name was Tony, which is my name and along with that beautiful blue star on the helmet, well you know, the rest is history.
I really do regret not being able to see Texas Stadium, but I will be at “The Palace in Dallas” for the Eagirls- Boys “Throw Down for the Crown” on January 3rd.
Does anyone from the zone do tailgating at the stadium! I would love to meet as many "Zoners" as I can while there.
