We have 2 loft apartments above our work office. I would like to set it up where the tenants can use the wifi from downstairs, we've tried in the past but the signal isn't strong enough.

Can anyone recommend a high strength/long distance wifi router, or maybe some kind of outdoor antennae? What is the easiest way to set something like that up?

The Netgear wndr 3700 has a fairly decent signal range. You can also load third party firmware DDWRT on it which will allow you to turn the signal transmit power higher. DDWRT is an amazing router firmware that gives you a ton of options that routers OEM firmware can't touch.

I should have added that you can use DDWRT to set up a router as a wireless repeater so you can have a wifi signal downstairs that is too weak to be picked up by the wireless devices but a wireless router with DDWRT should be able to receive the signal then repeat it throughout the upstairs. This is just one of many options with DDWRT.

Check out the offerings from amped wireless. Their whole premise is about having better range than other consumer offerings.

Aside from that, you can use many off the shelf routers, download an open source firmware, and crank up the wireless power.

I had the same issue in my GP's house. I'm not sure what ISP you have, but I just set up another cable modem / router I had laying around.

Instead of me listing some good ones take a look at a site I use often:

wirecutter

They do long term tests and rate items after using them.

Get a simple range extender that plugs into the wall. Pretty easy.
