Video: Watch as Big Tex is unveiled a day earlier than expected
The call to unveil Big Tex early came after high winds threatened to tear the massive curtain around him.
“That was the concern from the first moment we started planning this,” fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding said. “We’re calling it a premature birth.”
Vice President of Operations Mitchell Glieber and state fair President Errol McKoy made the call to drop the curtain Thursday.
The new Tex is wearing a white shirt with red and blue pockets, and a major highlight are the Lucchese boots Big Tex is sporting. The design is from the brand’s 1949 series when the company made boots for each state. The Texas boots feature the state Capitol with stars and longhorns.
The ceremony originally planned as the big guy’s unveiling will still take place Friday at 2 p.m. as a “welcome back” event, Gooding said. It will be the first time fairgoers will hear the voice of the new Big Tex.
“We still consider this the greatest comeback in history,” Gooding said.
