When Pete Carroll first got hired with the Seahawks he was the former HC of USC. Several pointed at the time, him being around the college game gave the Seahawks a distinct advantage cause of him knowing the players inside his conference and around the country. He was the one who found Richard Sherman, a former Stanford WR that Carroll thought could play corner. Such players like Russell Wilson, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner were all taken outside the 1st rd. His early drafts built a powerhouse, but as time wore on, their draft success disappeared, perhaps him being away from the game played a part.
 
That's funny I was thinking that the other day. Another recent example is Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers.
