David Buehler didn't do anything but kick the last two seasons for USC, but the Cowboys are experimenting with using him in other special teams roles to maximize the kickoff specialist's value on the gameday roster.
Buehler, a scout team fullback and safety his first season at USC whose combine numbers (4.62 40, 25 bench press reps) were impressive by linebacker standards, will work with the second-team punt and punt return units during the preseason opener. Buehler is a left wing on punt and left end on punt return.
The physical aspect of playing non-kicking special teams roles in fine by Buehler. He's actually having fun. The biggest adjustment is mentally preparing for the different roles.
"It's two ends of the spectrum," Buehler said. "You have to keep calm and composed for kicking, and you have to pump yourself up for special teams. So that's something I have to find a happy medium with."
