Before I became a head football coach, I was a golfer, hunter, fisherman and I owned and operated a real estate investment company. Being a head HS football coach in Texas is a year round job, leaves very little time for anything else, so for the last 13 years I haven't golfed once, I've gone hunting a couple of times and I got tired of seeing my $40,000 bay boat sitting in my back yard, so I sold it. Sold all of my rental properties and pretty much have spent most of my free time with my family.
I turned 50 a few months ago and have decide to retire either this summer or after next football season. I plan on getting back into real estate and some of my old hobbies. Thinking of how I might be spending my days in the near future got me to wondering what some of the Zoners do on their spare time. We have a very diverse group of people on here and look forward on getting some feedback. Maybe I'll pick up some new hobby ideas.

My favorite 2 things in the world: training/lifting and gaming.

You should train for a marathon or decathlon. It's always a very rewarding to get yourself in top shape to push yourself to the limit to see what you can do and how to improve for the next thing. Kayaking and hiking as well is awesome.

When I say gaming, I don't necessarily mean video games specifically. You can pick up card games such as poker which is always a fun way to challenge yourself mentally. There are so many highs and lows in poker it requires a lot of strategy, mentral fortutide, patience, and resilience. I like it because it's easy to learn and play but difficult to master.

If you haven't noticed, I love doing things where I challenge myself physically and/or mentally.

Thanks, I lost 100 pounds about 4 years ago and have been hitting the treadmill pretty religiously, I do want to start hitting the weight room more frequently. As far as gaming is concerned, I used to hit the blackjack table, online poker and blackjack is worth looking into. I also played a lot of chess back in the day, I need to look for some smart friends to play with. Gloat stay sharp. Thanks

Wait what?
Catching farts and painting them green?

Is this some kinda new fad I am unfamiliar with? I used to light farts on fire as a young ruffian but the fun and games stopped when my drawers caught on fire.

Random factoid, only a small percentage of the human population has the methane in their farts to be able to light them on fire. So consider yourself a rare breed, LZ :)

Coach (@Ranching), I enjoy biking (I have two nice Treks) and hiking. I also enjoy photography. And of course, as our dear friend Haley also pointed out, beer. Other hobbies: CowboysZone, our Cowboys, going to Kings and Angel games... and my biggest hobby, loving my dear, sweet sweet son. I do everything with him -- from trips to Universal City Walk, said hockey and baseball games, restaurants, and such.

a few things I have seen here in Texas on the High School coaching.

If you have the kids ears and they can relate to you. You should have a strong program for many years.

You've run into some very well connected people and hopefully can use those connections to move forward after your time is up.

Some coaches think they are the program - well to a small extent they are - but it's always about the kids.
What you impart to everyone involved as they pass through your program will stay with them forever.

Great post! I live your words, I've been very lucky to have helped a lot of kids and coaches. I've had 13 all-state players, over 20 have gone on to play college football and 7 of my former assistants have gone on to become Head Coaches. Won a few championships along the way, Great memories!

Singing. Photography. Both extremely amateur, but they make me happy. No one else. Just me. And my pets on occasion.

I do like to create my own recipes and make them. Sometimes they are a hit and sometimes not. When they are a hit, I always feel like, damn I'm never gonna remember how to make this again. What now?? :muttley:

I've taken up running in the last couple of years, did Loch Ness marathon this year. I've also started playing 7 a side football (soccer) recently after having not played for a few years. Me and the wife got each other bikes for Christmas this year so looking to get into that as well in the new year. Do like golf but don't get out much, same with hillwalking/hiking.
Enjoy beer so going to try homebrewing. I've made a few kits but going to try and teach myself how to make it from scratch.
