I am hoping that with so many members , that someone could shed some light on Hodgkin's lymphoma . Today , my daughter took my five year old granddaughter to a doctor due to a knot that was on her neck . My daughter was in total shock when the doctor ran some test and told her that my granddaughter had Hodgkin's lymphoma which he told her was cancer . At the present time , my family is in a panic . I have read several articles today , but sometimes it helps to hear some real life stories that comes from people rather than medical articles . The one knot in my granddaughter's neck has spread to seven places . Me and my family are a emotional mess now . My granddaughter is having surgery this Friday . Can anybody shed any light on Hodgkins ?

Hodgkin's... detected early, can be handled pretty effectively in the right circumstances...

It's a cancer that has long periods of remission when addressed early...

Our prayers are with you and yours...

If it's any consolation, Hodgkin's has a MUCH better prognosis than non-Hodgkin because it is very predictable and is usually isolated to only the lymph nodes in the earlier stages. If they caught it in time, which is very likely if her only symptom was a knot on her neck, it is very treatable and has an 80% remission rate. It also has one of the longest average remission periods of ALL cancers.

All in all, if one has to get cancer there arent many with a better overall outlook. Your granddaughter has an excellent chance to beat it and live a completely normal, long life. Thoughts and prayers with your family.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Hold strong and never give up the fight.

My dad had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but that is different than Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I remember, while doing research, some articles specifically stated not to confuse the two. So I researched both of them, to learn the difference. Clocked probably hundreds of hours, pulling all-nighters so I would be able to help my dad the best way I could.

Read, read, read, everything you can get. Take many notes. Know this disease inside and out, tell your daughter to do the same. Knowledge is key, don't rely on doctors to tell you everything, there is just too much. And they appreciate when the patient and family educate themselves. Then you will know what questions to ask and you will know more of what he is talking about, and what your granddaughter is up against. There are great books for children as well, don't keep your granddaughter in the dark. She has to understand on her level what she is fighting.

When my dad was battling his cancer, he said to me, "Don't feel sorry for me. I have lived a full life. And it was a good life. Feel sorry for those babies, who haven't had the chance to live yet. They are the ones who need help."

I will pray for your granddaughter, sir. May your family find peace and strength from within to help your little girl through this time. And may you be swelling with pride for her when she walks down her marriage isle in twenty years, as you remember these days.:)
