I know it's been a week since the draft, but my wife was at Barnes and Noble yesterday and picked up a USA Today Sports Weekly paper from 29 April to 5 May. Inside they graded each team's draft.

Cowboys - A - The Cowboys resisted the urge to deal high future picks, for which they deserve kudos.

Best pick - S Michael Hamlin - The Cowboys said they felt Hamlin was a third
value, so they obviously were happy to pick him up in the fifth round. He should be able to jump right into the safety rotaion.

Could surprise - CB Mike Mikens.

Giants - B+
Eagles - A
Skins - B-

Oakland - D
Dolphins - B+
Patriots - A
Ravens - C+
Steelers - C
Colts - A-
Chargers - C
Titans - C-

I think an A is a stretch, since they are not considering RW as part of the class, but I still feel it's a solid B with the potential talent we got.

I don't think the grades mean much good or bad when it comes to the draft. I will say I think Dallas did the right thing in not given up picks for the 2010 draft to move up in this draft which was considered pretty weak to begin with.

hahaha this cracks me up. Let me rephrase that:

"The Cowboys resisted the urge to deal high future picks, after having already traded all of their high picks for this draft"

It depends on how each grader values the picks.

If one place thinks that a team got good players or players with good potential with each pick.

He believes that at each pick we got a player who can either start down the road or become a good role player, and with that reasoning I agree.

These grades don't mean anything, they have more value each offseason in the next 3 years.

We cant really say we had an A draft , only time will tell.

But i think i have a pretty good hunch , that alot of these kids will make an impact.

I do maybe as high as a B, at this point, but I'm sticking with a C or C+ at this point.

We'll see how it all shakes out down the road.

Why didnt we pick up any additional picks for next year then? I was hoping for an extra 2nd or 3rd next year.

Grading a draft comes down to how you approach it. If you just look at how many big name/well known college players a team drafted or how many high picks they had, then Dallas would get a low grade. But if you instead look at each individual pick that a team has and what they do with it, you could easily come to a much different conclusion. Thats the key to Dallas' draft. They didn't have any high picks, so did they get good players with the multitude of mid round picks? Only time will tell!

So this guy rates teams based what the team says they had the player valued as? He must love all those teams who say about their 2nd round pick "we actually tried to get into the 1st to pick him up"

It takes 2 to tango and 2 to cut a deal. Because we may want something does not mean we had any offers for next years picks

I don't care about the grade, but I do find the comment about Hamlin interesting. It's very similar to what how we picked Scandrick last year; they were both graded as 3rd rounders on our board and we couldn't pass them up in the 5th. Hopefully Hamlin can show the same potential as Scandrick.

edit: I guess I'll add that a 3rd round grade means that they were both graded as an "A".

Ultimately having 12 total picks and drafting great values late is how you end up with A classes. Not knee-jerk day after A's, but 3 years later A's when it actually matters.

I could easily see McGee as a backup in 3 years, Mickens as the 3rd CB, Smith as the starting FS, Jason Williams as a starting ILB and one of Brandon Williams or Victor Hunter hitting and being a starter at OLB opposite Ware. If that happens that is an A+ draft.

And to think that lousy draftgod Gosselin only gave us a C. Last time I listen to him.

Time to get a subscription to USA Today :D

But seriously, let's see if drafting "football players" and guys who generally have high characters, and where one of the most important things in their life is playing football pays dividends for us.

I honestly think it will, injuries aside. IMO, a couple years from now, several of these players will be playing key roles, including starting roles.

If your grade is based on which team spent a pick on a player that will have the biggest immediate impact, obviously we'd be pretty high on the list with Roy Williams.
