I'm sure most if not all people are aware of this play, and the rule change stemming from it that remains to this day. But if you don't, here it is. I am making an argument that a rule change wasn't needed.

What difference does it make how, or in what direction someone fumbles? Let the play go. They are just complicating things for no reason.
The issue in that play was not that he fumbled forward, but that the ref didn't see what happened. If that exact play happened today it would have been ruled an incomplete pass or intentional grounding. Because on replay you can clearly see Ken flip the ball forward.
