Qb: Love Romo. If he goes down uhoh
Rb: I actually feel ok w DMC, Williams etc. But I'm over the moon if we land AP
Oline: I couldn't feel any better obviously
TE: Got the legend Witt and I think Esco will be an even bigger weapon. No worries
WR: Dez and Beas are good as it gets. TWill needs to advance a little more. Street not sure of

DL: Much better than last year for sure.
LB: As worried about this position as any. Need 16 games of Lee and McLain
CB: Meh. We'll see how Mo and Carr shake out
S: Meh again. Hopefully Jones is a quick study at here or corner. Wilcox needs improvement

K: Still love Bailey but he faded some at the end. Jones is ok

This is very early feelings obviously so much yet to shake out.

QB, Yes, Romo goes, then so does team, but all teams are in this boat too
RB, I feel RB will be better than most think
OL. No worries, which is why I think RB as we all as Romo protection is just fine
TE, agree, Wiien and Escobar are an extension of the receiving as well as the OL in blocking.
WR, yes, Dez & Beasley, no concern, TWill is fine, Street should make progress. Hope w can find a return guy from one of the FA's.

DL, DE's I feel much better about, but need Hardy back sooner than later. DT still a bit of a concern but the young guys need to pan out quickly.
LB, I feel ok with this too, but agree, health of Lee and McClain is key. But I feel they will be fine also.
DB, I am more concerned with this than any other position. More so,because of depth. CB will Mo recover in time to contribute early, I thin Jones will play better as a rookie than usual. I'll Carr be here, if so then I feel better, if not depth even more of a comcern. Scandricks, will his head be in the game or be worrying about a new contract still. s, need depth here too. But better here than at CB

ST. badly still the best, he will be fine. jones steady punter, not great, not horrible, we can improve this. horsey has the leg, but needs to he can place the ball better than in last years camp. Need to replace Harris and Spillman on ST coverage and tackles. Especially if Cam Lawrence and Jeff Heath are replaced too.

Of course, as you said, this is all early thoughts, will see what shakes out in mini camps and then start of TC

Can't really disagree with OP.

It's ashame we couldn't keep Carter on the cheap. I'd feel better about linebacker if we could've. He seemed to come on as the season progressed.

Overall though, I think our defense will take another step forward. Lots of young guys returning, all of which could potentially be better than last year, plus a few new faces that figure to be good fits.

I think DT is a bit of a concern but people are forgetting something important here. We probably are going to play out of the nickel about 60% of the snaps this year. There will be another 30% that is more base defense and about 10% that will be short-yardage.

In the nickel we are probably going to favor getting more passrushers on the field. Here we should be okay with Crawford, McClain, Hardy and Mincey playing a decent number of snaps.

I think the bigger concern is in the base defense. Here we have Crawford to play the 3-tech but we'll have to see what we can do with the 1-tech position. Bishop flashed some at the end of the season but it was really just a flash. Hayden has proven that you can line him up and still get by but he is a liability out there. You can play McClain out there but he is more of a disruptor and can run himself out of the play at times. Most of the other guys (Whaley and Colmean) are better suited to be 3-techs. The only saving grace is we can line up RoMc behind him who can take on OL and still make plays when the DL doesn't keep him clean.

Good stuff.

I'm also curious how the following 4 units will be
Kick coverage
Punt coverage
Kick returns
Punt returns

You pretty much have to have a high ranking in these groups combined to have a contender.
I'm not any Super Bowl team has not

You can stop with QB. Anything happens to Romo, season over, based on the current backups. Beyond that I still dont like secondary at all, the middle of the D Line, or counting on Lee and McClain.

RB is a slight concern. However it;t doesn't appear to be a concern to the FO so OK.
Would like a stouter DT for goal line stands .
Can live with the DB's but an upgrade next year is in order.

I would make one small correction. We need 19 games out of Lee and McClain.;)

1. QB - Do we keep Weeden or does Vaughan show enough that we only keep 2
2. DL - T Crawford and who else? I think Gardner moves inside. So we have Gardner, Whaley, J Crawford, Bishop, McClain and ...................... Hayden. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The day that we don't have Hayden and Mincey on this team is a day that we've taken our first step to having a very good defense. We are getting very, very close!
3. DE - Very solid now with Lawrence, Gregory, Hardy, Russell ................................. Mincey. Big question here is who gets dumped when Hardy comes back. Mincey better be ready to compete or else his age and the fact that he's a FA next year could see him gone.
4. CB - What to do with Carr? Will Claiborne came back at full strength, meaning nickel corner at best. I keep Carr. See if maybe he'll take a pay cut again, but I don't mess with the secondary. Jones stays at CB. He'll take over for Carr next year. If not this year. Mo will be gone next year. We need to develop corners for next year. Moving Jones to safety makes no sense to me. CB is more valuable than FS.
5. FS - So no Jones at Safety. Corey White should be our new FS. He's played it at the NFL level. He has all the tools to do it. It's his natural position. I like Tim Scott to make the team as well.
6. LB - Not much question here. The top 6 guys are basically locked and loaded. Question is do we keep 7 (Nzoecha)
7. RB - I think with the Leary chip in hand, Jerry makes a splash and gets us another starting quality runner. And no, not one from the land of a thousand lakes.
8. TE - I think Swaim pushes Hanna off the team.
9. WR - Goodley could be a Harris replacement. Farmer has rare measurables, but not a lot of production. They seem to like Street. I still think we only go with 5, so Street better bring it to camp or he may be out.

Don't know why anyone would be worried about LB. Worst case scenario of Brinkley, Hitch and Wilson with Brinkley only playing 2 downs really isn't that bad. And that's not even including the wildcard Gachkar.

DT worries me and that's about it.
The secondary is far from great, but by the time Hardy, Gregory, and D Law are clicking on all cylinders around week 8 or 9 the secondary will be looking much better.

Still think we are a corner short. Other than that I feel pretty darn good about the roster as a whole

I think that depends on how the Carr situation plays out.

Right now we have:

Carr
Scandrick
Mo
Patmon
Byron Jones
Corey White

I really doubt you're going to find a team with 6 CBs who stack up with those guys.

Now White and Jones may take some snaps at Safety but they are also capable of playing CB if needed.

I think the bigger concern needs to be Safety since we have Church and Wilcox. Heath is mostly a special teamer. Jones has played some Safety earlier in his career but has been playing CB the last two years. The situation with White is somewhat similar to Jones.

Mo may not play half the year and when he has been on the field he is awful
And Carr? A 16 game starter with zero picks doesn't instill a lot of confidence

Qb: I think Jameill Showers could be a guy worth developing; he could push Vaughn out IMO, with time, maybe pressure Weeden.
Rb: I'm one of the few that doesn't want to pay to get AP. I'm OK w/ Randle/Williams/DMC
Oline: resigning Leary & Free was big, adding Collins means they'll have 2 starting-caliber backups
TE: Witten is a rock, would like to see Escobar get used more
WR: I think #2 WR could be up for grabs, TWill gotta own it in camp

DL: DE looks good at starters/depth, but interior of line is Crawford and ???, little depth there
LB: if healthy...one of the best LB corps in the league...if healthy
CB: Jones helps but still think CB is weakest link in the D
S: starters good, depth awful

Showers, from the little Ive read on him, sounds like was really close to beating out Manzel at AM. Then he transferred because he felt like he got screwed over.

I read an article where Vaughan said that hes improved dramatically. I think he has a real shot to be the backup.
