Hot to Cold...?

What is your opinion of getting out of 1/2 hour of sauna or steam room and jumping stright into an ice bath?

Is this too much shock on your body, or is it invigorating go from one extreme to another?

I have two different opinions from friends of mine. One says it stimulates the body and the other guy says that it is unhealthy and could cause cardiac failure because of the exteme closing of the bodys pores.

Dude. The shock on your nads alone.....you should have more respect. Sheesh. :D

Mine are brass, so no problem there.
 
Cold water doesn't close pores, nor does hot water open them. It's just a myth. Like if you shave your body hairs that they grow back thicker and fuller.

I read of a fella in Chicago, several years ago, that was sunbathing and fell asleep. He was on his stomach. Several hours later one of the family members threw an ice chest full of melted ice and ice on the dude. He died of shock.

It could cause your body to go into shock, so it's risky. But hey, if one guy says it's exhilarating, might as well try it right?

I can only imagine the shrinkage...instantaneous! :laugh1:

That sounds like the best thing that can happen. After that it's all down hill.
 
They've been doing this in Scandinavia for hundreds of years. If you are healthy, there's probably no real problem, and it may actually toughen you up. If you have heart problems, etc, it's just another one of those things that you have to avoid/scratch off the bucket list.
 
I say try it. If we don't hear back from you then we'll all know what happened. :laugh1:
 
I did this last month at a luxury spa in Mexico last month followed by a massage on the beach...

I highly recommend the experience... it was invigorating and relaxing...

Even though your skin pores won't open/close, your capillary veins will constrict or relax as a reaction to temperature (not that it would hurt you anyway). The same thing happens when you drink alcohol and they relax more than they should, which is why your face turns red and you get hot.

Not trying to be a smart A just think it's interesting.

Actually, I had to do this in college when I severly sprained the inside part of by ankle (3rd degree-highest rated). Although it was just my anle not he whole body. I remember the trainer having me put my ankle in about 105 degree water for about 3 minutes and then in 55 degree water for 7 minutes. Had to get the swollen down and get the range of motion back. Yes, it was quiet a shock to my system. It appeared to work but it was painful due to the fact that I also had turf toe. I say try it and see if you like it. I would not go to cold though.

It depends on the person and how cold the water is you can cause shock, heart attack and hypothermia as possible side effects or none of that.

In Colorado i went swimming for 30 minutes in 40 degree water at 5:45 in the morning no big deal for me but some people would have been battling hypothermia. I thought it was invigorating I led two group of boys to jump in most lasted like 10=30 seconds before they where out of the water :D

The heart attack would not be because of the closing of pores but more due to shock. It really comes down to your health etc.

No you didn't. Unless you're some kind of mutant, un-dead zombie, 30 mins in 40 degree water, would drop your core body temp by enough, that you'd be on the verge of unconsciousness.

Cold water robs the body's heat 32 times faster than cold air. Physical exercise such as swimming, causes the body to lose heat at a much faster rate than remaining still in the water. Blood is pumped to the extremities and quickly cooled. Few people can swim even a few 100 yards, in even fifty degree water.

Exhaustion and unconsciousness occur in less than 10-15 mins in water 40 degrees or less. "Swimming" in water that temp, only decreases that time.
