GAME NOTES

Preview...

The Houston Texans look to even their road record when they travel to Dallas to face their interstate rival Cowboys from Texas Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Noon.

The Texans and Cowboys square off for the second time in the quest for the Texas Governor’s Cup. Houston has possessed the cup over the last four years after winning in their inaugural game against 19-10 from Reliant Stadium on Sept. 8, 2002.

Houston looks for their second win coming out of the bye week. In 2004, Houston used a strong defensive effort to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-6.

What to look for this week...
• The Texans offense scoring on their first drive against all three of their NFC opponents in 2006 (Philadelphia and Washington).
• QB David Carr throwing more touchdowns than interceptions to record more career touchdowns than interceptions for the first time since his rookie year in 2002. He enters this week’s game with 55 each.
• Carr looking to extend his streak of 90-plus QB ratings in every game this season to five. His career high is seven in 2004.
• TEs Owen Daniels and Mark Bruener catching one touchdown to tie the Texans’ single-season record for touchdowns by a tight end (Billy Miller-3 in 2002 and 2003).
• WR Eric Moulds catching his 50th career touchdown with one.
• Moulds reaching 700 career receptions with 7.
• CB Dunta Robinson starting his 37th consecutive game, the longest streak by a Texans defender. (Robinson has started every game during his NFL career).
• K Kris Brown reaching 700 career points with nine.
• Brown extending his team record of scoring in consecutive games. He enters this week with 39.
• G Chester Pitts, G Steve McKinney, K Kris Brown and P Chad Stanley playing in their 68th consecutive game. These are the only four players to appear in all the Texan games.
• Pitts starting his 68th consecutive game.

Offensive overview

Johnson getting his due...

WR Andre Johnson topped the 3,000-yard plateau in Week 3 against Washington, becoming the 50th active receiver to surpass 3,000 yards. For an encore, he followed that up by being named AFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 4.

Against Miami, Johnson led the Texans to their first win of the season with nine catches for 101 yards and the game-winning touchdown. It was Johnson’s third 100-yard performance in four games.

Johnson became the sixth Texans player to win league player of the week honors, and the first since WR Jerome Mathis won Special Teams Player of the Week accolades in Week 8 of 2005.

The Texans have had at least one player win the player of the week award in each season of the franchise’s existence.

Carr running hot...

QB David Carr has started the 2006 season extremely well, posting plus-90 passer ratings in all four games this season. It is the second time in his career that he has posted 90+ quarterback ratings in four consecutive games. The last time was from 10/3/04 vs. Oakland through 10/31/04 vs.
Jacksonville.

After five weeks, including the Texans’ bye week, Carr leads the NFL with a 108.9 passer rating. Carr took over the league lead in Week 3 and has not relinquished the top spot.

Carr also leads the league in completion percentage, at 73.0, and has the second-best touchdown ratio in the league. 6.3 percent of his passes have resulted in scores this year.

Carr has come through on third down, too. His third-down passer rating of 112.6 is second in the NFL behind on Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning.

O-line improvement...

One of the biggest keys to the Texans’ improvement in the passing game has been improved pass protection by the offensive line. Under the guidance of Assistant Head Coach/Offense Mike Sherman and Offensive Line Coach John Benton, the line has done a much better job of protecting QB David Carr through four games than they did at this point a year ago.

Through four games this year, Houston has allowed 15 sacks, an average of less than four per game. At the same time a year ago, Carr had been dropped 27 times, an average of 6.75 sacks per game.

Defensive overview

Defensive sack attack...
After struggling out of the gate this season, the Houston defense stepped up in a big way against Miami and played a key role in the team getting its first victory of the season.

The Texans defense surrendered just 289 net yards, which was the 13th-best performance in team history. Texans defenders sacked Miami QB Daunte Culpepper five times, the third-highest single-game total in franchise history.

SS Glenn Earl started the sack attack when he dropped Culpepper for a 10-yard loss on the first play from scrimmage. DT Seth Payne sacked Culpepper for a five-yard loss in the second quarter. Later in the second, DT Alfred Malone and LB Shantee Orr split a five-yard sack.Houston’s first two draft picks got in on the action on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter. DE Mario Williams got his first career sack, dropping Culpepper for minus-three yards. On the next play, Williams and LB DeMeco Ryans teamed up to sack Culpepper for a seven-yard loss.

Houston's big D...

Through four games, rookie LB DeMeco Ryans has 38 total tackles, including 33 solo stops, based on press box statistics. Both totals lead the team, and his average of 9.6 tackles per game ranks fourth in the NFL.

Ryans has recorded 10 or more tackles twice and has led the team in stops two times. Ryans’ 13-tackle performance in his professional debut is tied for the fifth-highest single-game total in the league this year. Before Houston’s bye week last weekend, Ryans led all rookies in total tackles.

In the Texans’ 17-15 win over Miami, Ryans recorded eight tackles, including seven solo stops, and split a sack with fellow rookie DE Mario Williams. Ryans also helped Williams record another sack by pressuring Miami QB Daunte Culpepper and forcing him toward Williams.

Ryans, the 2005 SEC Defensive Player of the Year at Alabama, was selected by the Texans with the first pick in the second round (33rd overall) of last April’s draft. The rookie won the starting middle linebacker position during training camp and led the team in tackles in preseason action.

Mario super against Miami...

DE Mario Williams had a big day in the Texans’ first win of the season against Miami. The first overall pick in April’s NFL Draft recorded 1.5 sacks, including the first of his career, and a game-saving pass deflection.

In the fourth quarter, Williams beat Miami RT Vernon Carey and sacked QB Daunte Culpepper for a three-yard loss. On the next play, Williams and LB DeMeco Ryans met at the quarterback and teamed up to drop Culpepper for a seven-yard sack. Williams consistently got pressure on Culpepper throughout the game before finally breaking through in the fourth quarter.

Williams’ best play of the game, however, came when he didn’t even make a tackle. With 1:43 left in the game, Culpepper found WR Chris Chambers for a touchdown to cut Houston’s lead to 17-15, and Miami elected to go for the two-point conversion in an attempt to tie the game.

RB Ronnie Brown took the handoff and started right before reversing his field and pulling up to throw a halfback pass. Williams recognized the trick play and dropped into coverage, and when Brown fired a pass into the end zone, Williams reached up and tipped the ball away to preserve the victory.
