I don't know that he will be a better coach than Kiffin, but I have to believe he is a better person. No way I would hire Kiffin as a HC if I was an AD unless he went elsewhere and did good for a decent number of years without scandals.

Applewhite might not be a "big" name type of HC that Houston's fan base might have wanted and I doubt it was their first choice but I have have to guess that Applewhite is pretty well known in Texas from his playing days and therefore should have a decent edge in recruiting young players.

Hope he does well for Houston.

Glad to see Major get his big chance as a HC. I think he will do a great job for the U of H

He was the best option out of all the candidates. Keep the current players/recruits happy. The defensive coordinator is a good coach too but I feel like you need to be a coach with an offensive background to succeed in the state. Gary Patterson is the lone exception but overall, the history doesn't lie - Mack Brown, Mike Leach, Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin, Tom Herman

One of the reasons Herman could not bring in Applewhite as part of his offensive staff at Texas is because Applewhite had a "scandal" as an assistant with the Longhorns a few years ago. Applewhite slept with a trainer and got in trouble for it.

Seems like a good hire. He coached under Nick Saban briefly.
