New University of Houston coach Tom Herman plans to hire Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator, according to FootballScoop.com.
Applewhite spent this season out of coaching after not being retained on Charlie Strong’s staff at Texas, where he served as co-offensive coordinator under Mack Brown the previous three seasons.
Applewhite is a recognizable name in the state and area. He set several UT passing records and was the Big 12 co-offensive player of the year in 1999. He also spent one season as offensive coordinator at Rice in 2006, helping the Owls end a 45-year bowl drought.
