An armed 84-year-old man held SWAT officers at bay in a home in southwest Houston this morning for nearly six hours before his arrest around 7 a.m.

The standoff began around 1 a.m. after the homeowner, Gerald Lancaster, fired a shot during an argument with his wife, who fled the home in the 10100 block of Amblewood and called police, authorities said. Lancaster, in an interview from the backseat of a police cruiser, said he had been drinking but his wife had not.

After failing to coax Lancaster out with phone calls and pleas over a loudspeaker, police fired tear gas into the home around 5:30 a.m. but said the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Marine veteran -- who said he owns enough guns to "take down the whole ------- army if I wanted to" -- withstood it and did not relent.

Finally, police observed through a bedroom window that the man was alert and unarmed, so they breached the home and apprehended him without a struggle. No injuries were reported, and Lancaster is charged with aggravated assault.

He later said he slept though much of the standoff.

Lancaster, who said he was a sergeant in Marine aviation during World War II and is a retired energy industry engineer, said he was surprised to see police converge on his home after the dispute with his wife.

When asked how long he's been married, Lancaster told reporters: "Too damn long."

6'3" 225. I thought old people shrunk the older they got. Dude is still huge. He must have been pretty fearsome looking as a 30 year old sergeant.

I hope they cut him a break.

Cutting men a break when they get ****faced and fire guns during arguments with their wives is exactly what could get the wives killed.

I don't think they should lock up a man of his age, they need to take all his guns away.

Who knows how long he had been threatening his wife in that way. If he's doing it at 84, chances are he did it when they were younger.

yeah, taking guns away from the legalized people is much easier than the criminals who buy em off kids.

Stop screaming what people tell you and understand stuff is going to happen.

She did the right thing and unless you arm her, its never going ot be fair, even if you took all his guns away as you suggest would that stop him?

Most likely not, if you ever want ot know if that works, just find the nearest black market and let me know.

What does a person have to do in order to become "unlegalized"? You can't just be poppin shots off as you please.

I agree though. Wouldn't matter if they did take them. He could likely kill his wife with his bare hands if he wanted to. 6'3? You kiddin me?

he slept thru most of it and no one was injured and thats it, is shooting guns at no one plus being drunk illegal? How far do you want ot take it, when is it looking at guns going to be illegal. Boys and girls guns are not the only things that kill people. Frankily it was the gun that gave him away.

and yes, 6'3 at 84, how big was he before hand.

Yes, it's illegal. That's why he's being charged with a crime. You can't shoot guys in the middle of an argument. Sorry.

Aside from being illegal, it's completely irresponsible which goes against everything that I believe about gun ownership. If you aren't responsible with guns, you shouldn't have them.

Nobody tells me a damn thing regarding what I say. I speak for myself and how I feel.

Yea, stuff is going to happen....like spousal abuse. You sound like someone that would pop his wife in the mouth and try to justify it with, "Well, there are worse things that happen in the world."
