How bad is Leary's injury?

Doesn't he have the same injury that lost us a safety (name escapes me) under Bill Parcells?

I haven't heard that it requires surgery, rather that it is chronic and degenerative.

Yes, that's who I am thinking about. Don't they have the same degenerative knee condition?

supposedly he can play now but the question is how long he will be able to play

I would take a chance and sign him, if he gets hurt again you don;t lose much, if he stays healthy then you have a nice player on our roster that adds some depth to a position of need.

Cowboys offensive line coach Bill Callahan attended a private workout for Leary in late March and came away impressed. The key for Leary is his knee. Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said the team gambled by not selecting an offensive lineman in the three-day NFL draft because they figured Leary would not get drafted. Leary's knee issues scared off several teams.

After extensive research, the Cowboys determined Leary has a chronic knee problem that will allow him to play now but might limit his long-term future.

"The issue for him is how long [he can play], it's not now. It's how long he can play," Jones said Saturday night. "That's why he fell the way he fell. We had our coach think he might be the readiest of any [drafted] offensive linemen."

If he has ability, why not give him a red-shirt and see if the problem can be fixed with the new techniques available.

I don't know what the problem is but it is usually articular cartilage in situations such as this.

The two possibilities right now are microfracture surgery or mesechymal stem cell injection.

What a coincidence, those are the exact same odds that you'll ever make a substantial contribution to the dialogue...

You don't mention a knee replacement. Why is that not an option? More than one year to recover & rehab?

Even if that were possible, I'm not sure the kid would want to do that.

He'd be lining himself up for another one down the road at some point, hell might even be 2 and as it is he's perfectly capable and probably isn't bothered too much by it on a day-to-day basis.

I watched a total knee replacement once and it is brutal. Bone pulp splatters going everywhere as they hammered one of the pieces in place.

Oh yeah, that's not a nice operation to watch. Saw one on the old medical channel one time.

Yea, for as much technology as we have, this procedure is pretty barbaric. You literally get a hammer out and start whacking away.

My brother-in-law had both of his knees replaced whe he was in his late 30's. He played college baseball and is a pretty big guy. Personally, my the ACL has been miss in my left knee for over 20 years. At some point, I'm going to have to have a knee replacement. Not looking forward to it.

So does this mean his knee is fine right now and he's going to be a full participant or that his knee is already bothering him a bit, not enough to stop him from playing, and will just get worse over his career?
