How Bad is the Running Game?

It's simple people... We can't block anybody. At least not in the scheme we are currently using. We continue to try and force all these huge offensive linemen to play twinkletoes with zone blocking schemes instead of lining 'em up and punching the defense in the mouth until they give in the way teams do to us. We continue to run delays, draws and shotgun handoffs to a one cut downhill power back. We also refuse to allow the backs or the line for that matter to get into any sort of rhythm in the run game. We almost never run the ball on back to back plays and we almost never give it to the same back on back to back plays. It's mind boggling. I am convinced that we simply don't WANT to the run the ball as much as we CAN'T run the ball.

is it time to put on the tin foil hat and wonder if there is deliberate sabotage here?
I know that stupidity is almost always the cause followed by arrogance when you are looking at epic failure but still....

After 7 games, Rico Dowdle is the Cowboys rushing leader with 246 yards.

You have to go all the way back to the first year of the Cowboys existence to find a season in which no RB had more yards than Dowdle after 7 games.

In most Cowboys seasons there were two RB's with at least 246 yards after 7 games. In 1976 and 1977 there were three.

Here are some Cowboys RB's after 7 games:

2014-DeMarco Murray-913 yards

1995-Emmitt Smith-812 yards

2016-Ezekiel Elliott-799 yards

1988-Herschel Walker-665 yards

1973-Calvin Hill-662 yards

1983-Tony Dorsett-660 yards

2006-Julius Jones-616 yards

1962-Don Perkins-602 yards

Great RB's have always been part of the Cowboys legacy.

The Cowboys are last place in the NFL in rushing TD's after 7 games with 3. There has only been four seasons in which the Cowboy have scored less on the ground after 7 games. They were all losing seasons.

Two of those seasons were during the Campo years. he was fired after the 2nd one.

Another was 2010. The HC, Wade Phillips, was fired halfway through the season.

The other year was in 1997. Barry Switzer was fired after that season.

In 7 games, out of 152 running attempts, the Cowboys have 10 plays that went 10 or more yards. Four of them belonged to a WR. The longest run from scrimmage so far this season is 13 yards.

Five RB's have now carried the ball for the Cowboys. Only one of them averages more than 3.1 yards a carry.

In the 1st half of games on 1st and ten, no Cowboys RB averages more than 3 yards a carry. Again, we are talking about 1st and ten only.

Inside the redzone, the Cowboys average .6 yards a carry.....as in six tenths of a yard......as in less than 2 feet....as in less than 22 inches.....a carry.

There are 9 RB's drafted in the past three years, in the 4th round or lower, that are currently averaging 5 or more yards per carry this season.

Currently, the Cowboys are ranked 32nd in rushing yards, 32nd in average yards per run, 31st in rushing TD's and 28th in average length of time per drive.

About a third of all Cowboys running plays by RB's went for 1 yard or less.

Only the Cowboys 1-15, 1989 season had fewer rushing yards after 7 games.

Only the Cowboys 2005 season averaged less yards per carry after 7 games
OMG. its even worse than I thought.

It really does look like it at times. After Zeke had that nice tackle breaking 11 yard run in the 2nd quarter and we lined up in empty backfield and passed the next play I was done. Zeke looked ready to get going and we just said "Nah we don't wanna be runnin the ball for 10 yards a pop." There were 3 or 4 chances to establish a running game that night and we passed on all of them. If somebody told me McCarthy was sabotaging himself hoping to get fired and get paid millions NOT to coach the rest of this season I would not push back on them at all at this point.

Wow, good research PM. This is like the closing argument in a criminal trial, lol. And the facts are overwhelming.

I‘m still dumbfounded that a so called serious NFL front office sat through an entire NFL draft last spring saying, “Nah…we don’t need a RB. We good with Rico D, Deuce, some guy named Freeman, and our boy Zeke. We good.”
