Using NFL Draft Scout/CBS Sportsline's early ratings:

First Round

Margus Hunt, DE, SMU... 6-7, 290 pounds, 4.65 second 40... this native of Estonia is a physical freak, plain and simple... he's currently ranked 37th by CBS Sportsline, but I look for him to have the kind of season that moves him up the board...

Alternatives-- Alex Okafor, OLB, Texas... Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M (the son of Hall of Fame tackle Bruce Matthews, he's an underclassman, the only underclassman I'll be considering here)... DJ Fluker, OT/OG, Alabama (I think of him as a poor man's Cordy Glenn)... TJ McDonald, S, USC...

Second Round

Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia... 6-3, 216 pounds, 4.75 second 40... I chose him over Landry Jones here because I think there's a greater chance that he'll be on the board later in the 2nd round, and because Landry throws a few too many ints for my taste... but all in all, this is the year to grab a successor to groom for Romo, in the second or third round range...

Alternatives-- as already mentioned, Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma... Gerald Hodges, LB, Penn State (yes, another Penn State linebacker, Hodges is a converted safety so he should be able to handle his coverage responsibilities)... Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas...

Third Round

Tavon Austin, WR/KR, West Virginia... 5-9, 175 pounds, 4.35 second 40... a cat-quick slot receiver and a dangerous kick returner...

Alternatives-- Alex Hurst, OT/OG, LSU... another Cordy Glenn type... Brad Sorensen, QB, Southern Utah...

Fourth Round

Mark Jackson, OT, Glenville State... 6-5, 325 pounds, 5.1 second 40... great agility for such a big man...

Alternative-- not much here, but I kinda like Michael Williams, TE, Alabama... at 270 pounds plus, he's almost a third guard... I just have some reservations about drafting a blocking tight end as early as the fourth round...

Fifth Round

Zach Boren, FB, Ohio State... 6-0, 250 pounds, 4.65 second 40... a terrific lead blocker, he has speed enough to offer a little something as a receiver out of the backfield too...

Alternative-- Kenjon Barner, RB/KR, Oregon... 5-11, 200 pounds, 4.35 second 40... the backup to LaMichael James last year, he had his moments too... he's similar to James in playing style, but a little bigger and surprisingly enough, a little faster... truth is, I'd be just as happy with Barner as I would be with Boren...

Sixth Round

Devonte Holloman, SS/OLB, South Carolina... 6-2, 235 pounds, 4.5 second 40... if he stays at safety, he might be a Darren Woodson type, but he might end up at ILB in the NFL...

Alternatives-- none yet, I haven't gotten past the first 200 prospects on CBS Sportsline's ratings... I just wanted to offer an early take on the draft, to hopefully spark some conversation while it's slow in here...

Remember, these ratings are extremely premature, and will assuredly change between now and next April (example-- Levy Adcock was in most draft guru's top 50 at the start of last year, but he went undrafted), so this mock is really an exercise in telling y'all about some draft prospects that I have found in my early studies... so, here's my mock:

1) Margus Hunt, DE, SMU... 6-7, 290 pounds, 4.65 second 40
2) Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia... 6-3, 216 pounds, 4.75 second 40
3) Tavon Austin, WR/KR, West Virgina... 5-9, 175 pounds, 4.35 second 40
4) Mark Jackson, OT, Glenville State... 6-5, 325 pounds, 5.1 second 40
5) Zach Boren, FB, Ohio State... 6-0, 250 pounds, 4.65 second 40
6) Devonte Holloman, SS/OLB, South Carolina... 6-2, 235 pounds, 4.5 second 40
7) Who the bleep knows?? Probably a defensive player, to keep Rob Ryan from losing his mind at the offensive nature of this draft, one who can contribute on special teams...

I admit I'm intrigued by Margus Hunt. Couple of issues though: 1) He'll be a 26 y/o rookie, 2) Multiple shoulder surgeries from all his years of discus and shot put, 3) Production doesn't come close to athleticism. Having said all that I would be interested if he has a very good senior season. I think he'll be gone before we pick when he puts up circus sideshow numbers at the combine.

Very weak class for C's and I think the Cowboys like Costa a lot except for his size. Their strategy is now to surround him with size at G. Livings is not a long term answer at G and I've heard that is contract is really 2 year deal. I don't thin Nagy or Arkin will be long term answers either. If we hit on Leary we are still looking for another IMO (no offense to Bernadeau). I like Chance Warmack 6-3/320 LG Bama and Larry Warford 6-3/336 RG Kentucky.

I like TE Michael Willams a lot. 6-6/270 blocking machine who isn't close to done growing yet. Heck, he could grow into a T one day. But, I think a team that sucked so much in short yardage, goal line, red zone, and which lost a very good blocking TE should have an interest in a guy with that skill set and size.

1) Margus Hunt DE

2) Montee Ball RB

3) Larry Warford G

4) Michael Willams TE

I like it.

I think Smith could rise up the boards this year and sneak into the first rd. Unlike most spread system QB's, he has a lot of experience under center. He is also accurate and show's good poise in the pocket. He can hurt you with his feet, but isn't what I consider a running qb.

Love the Austin pick. He reminds me of Sproles. Can make things happen in the return game as well as a reciever.

Do you see Mark Jackson playing OT or guard in the NFL ? I have heard good things about him but then again he is playing a Glennville State.

Hunt was dominant in the bowl game last year. Verified he would be a 26 year old rookie. That knocks him down at least a round or two IMO.

how about a S in there somewhere

Robert Lester*, S, Alabama

T.J. McDonald*, S, USC

Bacarri Rambo*, FS, Georgia

Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma

Brandon Weeden is older, and still went in the first round... if Hunt dominates this year, he'll go quite high...

I almost hope he suffers a minor injury that keeps him from putting up good numbers this season...

Almost... :D

Uhhh, I believe I had McDonald, Kenny Vaccaro from Texas and Devonte Holloman from South Carolina on my list, and in my mock at the end, I had the Boys drafting Holloman in the 6th round... you can't say I ignored the safety position...

I invite you to do a little research on Holloman, to me he sounds like a bigger but slightly slower Darren Woodson... he has linebacker size, but decent speed for a safety...

Now, to answer your question about specific safeties:

Rambo's off my list because he recently got suspended 4 games for a failed drug test... sorry, when I read a player has a drug history, he gets taken off my list... I'm leery of Lester because a) he was surrounded by a lot of top defensive talent, and I wonder if he'll be as good now that he's the man in the secondary, and b) because he has recurring back spasms, which may suggest a back problem... Jefferson's not on the list because he's an underclassman, and like I said, other than the Matthews kid, I did not consider any underclassmen... the only reason I included Matthews is I have read in a number of places that he's all but certain to come out after this year...

I saw this was your first post, and that you just joined up, so permit me to welcome you to the festivities, Rafter... hope you enjoy your time in here, this place is loaded with knowledgeable Cowboys fans...

Bear, have you looked at the big NT/DT that Georgia has ? IIRC one is named Jenkins. They have a couple of these biguns and I haven't took the time to research them. From watching them play last year, they looked like they were going to be good.

I would like a draft devoted to nothing but the trenches myself. I wouldn'mind a safety or OLB , but some major upgrades to the dline and oline would do wonders tor this team. Your first pick would be great it he backs up his bowl performance with a solid season.

I have a man crush on TJ McDonald, so I would go there.

After you mentioned him in a PM, I really like him too. I would like him with some picks for the trenches. He seems like a much better coverage safety than Barron.

Would you do it in the 1st round this year if the right guy was on the board when we pick?

I might take a QB in round 1 and let him sit on the bench for a few years.

If Tyler Wilson were available when we pick than I would take him.

If Garrett thinks his guy is there in the first round, why not?? It wouldn't be my first option, not with some really nice QBs likely to be on the board in the 2nd and 3d round, but I'd trust that the redhead knows quarterbcks...

I have a feeling Austin from WVU will have a huge year and be a late first ala Kendall Wright.

For me, that would depend on how the season went. If we have some surprises this season that fill the holes on OL and Safety, then I would be more inclined to consider spending a first rounder on a QB. If we are still struggling, I would not do it.
