How can we fix the OL and get more depth?

“Fixing“ the OL:
  • Get Zack Martin back (hello Jerry?)
  • Be prepared to pick up a veteran G or swing T (or 2) on waivers when final cuts happen in 2-3 weeks.
  • May have to admit we have too many “developmental“ players on the OL. Patience to develop a player is great until you look up and almost every backup you have is “developmental project”.
Guiding question- Are we rebuilding or trying to win now?
I know our FO will say both but that’s not always possible.
I think we definitely add 1-2 on the line at final cuts

Actually I wasn't that high on the kid from Florida.....he was constantly getting blown up by 220lb LBers in the Sr Bowl. The real mistake was letting McGovern walk....especially after letting Conner Williams walk. What is the point of burning high picks on O-lineman if your just going to let them walk in 4 years???? Your developing players hitting their prime for other teams....that's just stupid. But hey.....this front office is known for their stupidity.

This is a very good point. One signed a 3 year 23M contract, and the other a 2 year 14M contract. Those contracts aren't cap crushing.

Who plays G for us if Tyron gets injured? The other Smith will move out to LT, but who do the Cowboys insert at LG?

This club desp
Backups we got suck. Can we trade someone? Any free agents still out there? OL is our biggest need other then maybe kicker.
This club desperately needs a REAL GM to find the diamonds in the rough to help this sorry situation of a backup offensive line.

Depth is overrated.

If a team has to depend on their O-line depth for more than one starter missing half a season, then this team isn't going anywhere anyway.

Looking at the last ten Super Bowls.......20 offefnsive lines.....100 O-line starters.....

O-linemen that were SB starters missed an average of one and a half regular season games. Thats a combined seven and a half missed games per squad.

50 of them didn't miss a regular season game.

24 of them missed 1-2 games.

13 missed 3 or 4 games.

Only two of them didn't start the majority of regular season games.

One of the most glaring similarities of Super bowl teams over the past decade has been an O-line that was practically intact the entire
season. Last season the 49ers and Bills line missed a combined total of 5 games each. The Chiefs O-line missed a total of 3.

Other than the game that was canceled, the Bengals O-line missed a combined one game.....by La 'el Collins.

If the goal is the Super Bowl then this season truly does hinge on the health of Tyron Smith. This is why I took the position that Tyron should be the swing tackle, start Tyler at left tackle and make a decision on LG.

Somebody has to step up.

The problem is that the FO views the team through rose-colored glasses and overrates the talent in some of the position groups with the offensive line being one of them.
I get that you can’t have stud players at every position, but at the same time you need to have serviceable depth if a starter or two go down during the season. Other than Peters, who is no longer with the team, which back-up OL can come in and give quality reps? Some of these OL have been on the roster for a couple of years and just really haven’t developed, whether it is due to injury or lack of ability. Whatever the reason(s), this FO must be proactive in addressing the lack of depth on the OL for it’s most likely not if an injury happens, but when. Let it not take years to address this weakness as it did with the DL…and some may argue it is still a weakness, but hoping Mazi is a step in the right direction.

Plain and simple, the line fell apart at the end of last year, when we had to play the backups. AND McGovern and Peters were on the roster. Not sure how anyone couldn’t be worried about this unit. Injuries are going to happen.
