We need a # 2 receivers, tight end ( Witten isn't what he once was), upgrades ( JPP) in secondary to really really compete with Atlanta.

Until the Cowboys can get past the divisional round they're not close. We have a championship caliber offense but the defense isn't even close to being championship caliber. Too many holes.

Before we're close to reaching a SB we have to be able to build on a solid regular season by following it up with another solid regular season. The Cowboys haven't made the playoffs in back to back seasons since the 06 and 07 seasons. We appeared to be on the cusp of reaching a SB following the 07 season after going 13-3 but fell flat in 08 missing the playoffs when expectations were sky high heading into that season. We then surprised everyone in 09 with an 11-5 season and a playoff win in the wildcard round when expectations for the team were low. We followed that season up with a miserable 6-10 2010 season when many were picking the Cowboys to reach the SB. Expectations were raised again after a very surprising if not shocking 12-4 2014 season in which many were picking the Cowboys to win no more than 4-6 games. The team went on to win a playoff game before losing a close battle to Green Bay. The following season the team once again fell FLAT with the worst season the franchise has suffered since the 1989 season with only 4 wins. The Cowboys have been so up and down it's hard to figure out what to make of them. Here we are again having just come off a great regular season that produced 13 wins but like in 07 it led to a very disappointing one and done. Now we have to hold our breath until next season to see what Cowboys team shows up this time around. We can't allow what happened in the playoffs to lead to a hangover next season.

We have to build on the positives and not allow the negatives of the playoff loss to the Packers carry over to the 2017 season. We have to make up our minds if we're contenders or pretenders. We're once again in the same situation we were in after the 2007 season of having to validate what was a very surprising 13-3 regular season. Many of us on the board I was on in 07 thought that season although it ended very abruptly with a one and done might be the start of something special. We had a young QB to build with so it looked promising but the consistency from one year to the next wasn't there. It was basically up one year and down the next. It seems like the team either becomes complacent after a solid regular season or they can't recover from the disappointment of what happened in the playoffs. All of the championship teams the Cowboys have had, you could see something special on the horizon because they continued to build on the success they had the previous seasons. They were mentally tough teams that became more determined the following year to get over the hump.

Let's face it it's going to be difficult to better the 2016 regular season win total after coming off 13 wins but we have to prove this past season wasn't a fluke by following it up with another solid season that leads to a division title. We need to gain playoff experience and become battle tested, that's what led to all our great teams in the past. They kept knocking on the door year after year until they kicked it in. You could see Landry's 60s and 70s teams improve each season and become more battle tested by consistently making the playoffs and developing the mental and physical toughness it took to beat the top teams in the playoffs. There were a lot of disappointments along the way but the team kept giving themselves a chance year after year, developing what it took to get it done when it mattered most and it eventually led to a dynasty. If you're going to be great you have to be resilient. The key to success is being persistent and not allowing setbacks to discourage you.

When Jimmy arrived in 89 he built the team from the ground up and the team improved each season going from 1-15 in 89 to 7-9 in 1990 to 11-5 in 91 and a playoff win, to 13-3 and a SB title in 92. We have to continue to ride the wave of momentum we built this season and we have the opportunity to do that with a young QB coming off the best rookie season of any QB in NFL history and a dynamic rookie runner who led the league in rushing. If the Cowboys are going to take that next step and be able to get past the top teams that have elite QBs in the playoffs they have to build a solid defense that has a strong pass rush. All of our championship teams had defenses that had dominate pass rushes, led by at least one elite pass rusher who had to be accounted for.

Once our offense would start to take over a game our defense would start landing the knockout punches with sacks and forcing turnovers. Our Doomsday defenses of the 70s led by Randy White and Harvey Martin would terrorize QBs especially in the 4th quarter. Opposing QBs would walk up to the line of scrimmage with fear in their eyes as Randy White would be staring them down. In the early 90s our defenses led by Charles Haley created more than a dozen turnovers in our 3 SB wins. Now that the NFL is such a pass oriented league it puts more of a premium on having a great pass rush. We need to spend this offseason going all in on the defensive side of the ball and improve our pass rush or we're going to continue being ousted in the playoffs.

Denver and Houston move up to on the cusp if they get Romo, especially if Brady and Big Ben retire which seems a bit likely

Houston has to find a franchise QB first. Only the biggest hurdle in all of professional sports. Although one could argue a bus driver could be enough with that defense firing on all cylinders.

Personally I'd put Carolina a tier or two above the Cleveland one.

The Texans need more than a bus driver because despite them being #1 in defense in 2016, they only had 31 sacks which was 3 fewer than the Cowboys. The Texans running game wasn't bad ranking 8th but they still need a productive, playmaking QB if they're going to get over the hump.

We can scrutinize this roster to death but Dallas was literally one play away from hosting the NFC Championship game in a match up where the point spread would be somewhere around a pickem +/- 2 points. Every team in the league would take that.

Obviously improvements are needed and this is a year to year league, but Dallas is as "close" or closer than 90% of the teams in the league.

Big Ben has already said he's contemplating retirement, and if Brady wins his 5th Super Bowl what more does he have to play for? Why not go out like Elway did?

Brady has 4 Super Bowl wins and is playing as good as ever. There's no reason for him to step down if he wins another Super Bowl because he's building a legacy at the position that may never be matched. Elway's body was breaking down, his game was in decline and he was just thankful to end his career with a couple of Super Bowl wins after three Super Bowl failures.
