How Cowboys OT Tyron Smith is Becoming More Valuable Every Year

May 30, 2020 - Tyron Smith is about to play his 10th season in the NFL and is one of the longest-tenured players on the Cowboys’ roster. But even as he combats age and chronic injuries, Smith remains one of Dallas’ most valuable assets. In fact, that value has been increasing in recent years.

The 1st-Round pick in 2011, Tyron was the first player drafted after Jason Garrett became head coach and kicked off a new era of Cowboys football. He marked the beginning of a philosophical change in prioritizing the offensive linemen that has steadily continued for the last decade.

Smith has been one of the gold standards for left tackles during this run, having gone to the last seven Pro Bowls and being named to multiple All-Pro teams. It was no surprise when, back in 2014, the Cowboys gave Tyron a massive 8-year, $98 million extension on his contract. That's not what I said. That's what you just said. I said I'm not paying Dak a cap % that is too high. I said I'm not agreeing to any contract that pays him 35 AAV over 4 years because it severely limits what the team can do with the cap, going forward. However, if you are asking me, yes, I believe that the case can certainly be made that it will get us there sooner. But that's not really the point of this thread.

Dalton is a bridge to another QB. If you can put yourself in the right situation, I believe you can acquire another that could afford us opportunity to win another championship.

Well, I've kinda been over this before but if you are asking my opinion, I would guess the Cowboys would be interested in Trevor Lawrence. I'd imagine that if they could work a deal, that would be the target.

So you think the team with the #1 pick will be trading it. What if they need a QB? Maybe you get fields. How do you know they are a lock and will get us a SB win in 2-3 years? Will they even be as good as dak?

If there were, this discussion would be way different. If anybody could guarantee me that paying Dak what he wanted would guarantee a championship, then this would be a very different discussion but the truth is there are no guarantees. It wont be but thats why you are tagging Dak right? This year Dak is in Dallas unless a trade offer comes in that is too good to turn down. With what you get in any trade, you probably have three 1s to work with. That's probably enough to move up. Dak has proven that he can go 8-8 on a loaded offensive team as well. See, here's the thing. It's not like I want Dak gone but that's up to him. If he and his representative do not want to accept the offer, then what choice do you really have?

Here's a question for you. If you were Dak and the choice was to either take 35 AAV, say 110 Guaranteed for 5 years to stay in Dallas or 40 AAV 80 Guaranteed for 3 years to play for a team like Jacksonville, would you do it?

I know this is a business but you know what, if somebody came and told me that I could make a mil a year if I was willing to work in raw sewage all day long, but could take home 750k if I just stayed in the Gig I had right now, I am 100% certain that I would stay. Now, before anybody goes there, I'm not comparing Jacksonville or any other team to sewage but, I am trying to draw parallels to situations where you have a choice to, perhaps, make more money or simply make a very nice salary and live your life in a much better situation. What is that worth to you?
