How crazy is it going to be if Cowboys select another Te in the 2nd?

Probably no more crazy then this board seems to go about almost every single pick when their pet cat wasn't selected there.
 
This year is a little different, as in we don't currently have a bona-fide #2 Te already on the roster.

I think it is a good idea as I really like the balance a 2-TE formation allows. You can go from a power running attack to a spread passing attack from one down to the next without changing personnel. You can quick huddle and go to 3rd down without allowing the defense to change their personnel and take advantage of the mismatches it creates.

The key to such an offense is having two dual threat TEs. That is they are acceptable blockers and good receivers.

The problem we have had with our 2 TE sets is drafting an appropriate complement to Witten. We probably gave up on Fasano too quickly and Bennett never matured as a receiver, unfortunately.

If we are going to spend a second round pick on a TE he has to be a very good receiving threat. The problem with Bennett is that he looked the part but he really didn't have an impressive college resume as a receiver. We knew he was a good blocker and a good athlete so we assumed he could be a good receiver and failed in our projection. The problem with Fasano apparently was that he wasn't a good enough blocker.

I think there is a good option as a dual threat TE in this draft in Fleener but it is a weak TE class so I doubt he drops to us in the second round. If he does I would have no major qualms with the pick but we must change to a 2-TE offense for the pick to make sense.

The other reason I don't mind a TE pick is that I really think Witten is starting to slow down and I doubt he will be this productive in 3 years so it makes sense to start looking for his replacement soon. I think we can get by fine with Phillips and a low round pick for the next two years but after that it will be a major need.
 
How would it be crazy? I'd actually be shocked if it didn't happen.
 
The guy I like is Egnew. Prolly not at #45, but he's gonna be a good one.

Be shocked if he gets past the Gnats. Both TEs blew out knees in SB

This is my feeling as well. Hopefully they are happy with MartyB. :D
 
Why would that be crazy? They run a 2-TE set offense and currently only have one all-around TE on the roster. Unless they de-emphasize the 2-TE sets in 2012 - which is possible since they finally got the FB they wanted since last year - I fully expect TE to be a high priority in the upcoming draft.

They didn't run out 2 TEs all that often when Fiametta was playing well...
 
I really wouldn't be too happy. Not that the team doesn't need another TE, but because this is a pretty horrible class for them.

Trenches, trenches, trenches.
 
I think the boards biggest reaction of disappointment is the 1st when they don't take DeCastro.
 
We have needs all along the Defensive Line and at OLB on defense. Hitting there would probably help the team out the most overall.

Decastro does look like he'd be a solid pick though, just not sure Jerry will go Guard at 14, and I would find it hard to blame him to hesitate.

I keep thinking Poe, but the more I hear about the guy, despite his freakish athletic talent showcased at combine, he was consistently productive in games, so perhaps we go with a guy that was more productive. I don't think the Cowboys can afford to miss on their 1st rounder this year, so would prefer to get a solid contributor than say a 25% chance at a home run.

The reason I say that is, that Romo, Ware, Witten, Rat - the window is closing on those guys, and we need to add some contributors now to have a shot at making and doing anything in the playoffs the next couple of years.

Decastro is probably a safer pick from that perspective, but our defense needs the bigger talent injection.
Tough one.

to answer the original post.

I think, to say the majority of the board would be VERY upset with a TE in round 2 would be an understatement.

Too many other glaring needs where an upgrade would be more productive. We need starters in positions that play the majority of snaps from those early picks.

Not situational players, no matter how good.
 
I know I wouldn't be crazy as long as it's a guy who represents value at 45.
 
The only TEs worth a 2nd round grade are Fleener and Dwayne Allen. If they're not available, I wouldn't even look at the remaining TEs until Rd. 5 or maybe 4 if we somehow pick up an extra 4th. So, if we really covet another TE, it's got to be in Rd.2 because that's the only round where they will have significant value.
