How Dallas should have picked

Looking at how the draft actually went, here's how I would have picked. Taking the Jax trade, and then trading with the Patriots to get a 2nd, (just like my mock philosophy) I would have done this.
28 Gabe Carimi, OT
33 Dowling Ras-I
40 Jarvis Jenkins
49 Marvin Austin
70 Will Rackley
71 DeMarco Murray
110 Edmond Gates
137 Marcus Cannon
176 Mark Schiechel
220 trade up w/ 143 for 137
252 Lawrence Guy

All right, I get it. I need to just accept the picks we have. It's time for me to "get over it" I should really just "move on"

But hey, just having fun here. How would your dream draft have gone if you knew how the picks would have lined up from the start?

I don't know much about Jarvis Jenkins, he any good? Will likely be playing at defensive end in the 3-4.

He was quite productive in college, I would put him at DE, in case one decides to leave in free agency. Right now Dallas has no backup plan in that scenario.

Heh... I like what you did better, too. Maybe I'd have thought about Sherrod over Carimi, but I like Carimi, too.

Still not a big Murray fan... I'd have taken a big power back somewhere.

I did really like the FB we took late, not that you ever expect much out of seventh rounders.

I always have problems with "should'ves".

Trade down? Twice? Yeah, we could've traded down with Jax....and we POSSIBLY could've traded down with the Pats. But they certainly wouldn't have given up BOTH 28 and 33 for the 16th pick....sorry......We would have to give up probably pick forty or 49.

I still don't see how you picked up an extra third. Again, I think you overvalue our pick at 9 (the trade with Jax was only for a 2nd) and the one we could've received at 16.

Carimi is a player I really like.....but you don't pass on a player that could be SPECIAL, for a player that could be GOOD. Marvin Austin does not fit a 3-4 defense....and I think you're missing a LB...which I view as a need. I think Dowling and Jenkins were overdrafted.

It's clear to me you value quantinty over quality. Both Tyron Smith and Bruce Carter are potential stars in the NFL.

Again....I know this is fun for folks. It's just not a realistic situation.

You know, I meant to trade for a 2nd and 3rd initially, then changed my mind and went for two seconds instead. But I never moved that third out of there.

Uh... quick thinking here, move down to #59 should do it from 33 and then I'll pick up Brandon Harris instead of RasI dowling.

And no, the patriots probably wouldn't have done it, I just would have made them!

Just make sure and come back and tell everyone how bad your darft was in a few years when 3/4 of the guys you picked are busts or out of the league.

That's what's going to happen because it's what happens every year to most of these guys that are picked.

If we could get 2-3 major contributors a year we would be doing good.

Actually, I wouldn't mind that... those who want to can get to have the advantage of hindsight when making their best possible mock, go on record with it, then see how that pans out over the next 4 years or so.

Different teams and schemes can make a big difference in any players success, but it would still be interesting.

I for sure would have accepted Jax trade as well. What I wanted and what Jerry and co wanted are 2 different things so I won't go into the whole draft. But at 16 we could have went Castonzo, 40 could have been Moore/Harris, and still got Carter at 49. Much bigger impact in my opinion and we still get a more than solid RT for a long time. I just feel like they devalued the secondary a lot.

Dallas didnt trade back so this is pointless. I'm sure they tried and couldn't trade back so if your going to do a should have draft, then use the same picks the cowboys used.

From another post I read JJ tried to move back into ther first round for Cam Heyward, we should all be happy someone put a rag in his mouth and held his hands down so he didn't raffle off next years draft to do so. Yes it would have been nice to trade back for a few extra picks but they have been doing that for years and it hasn't really worked out that well. I am more than happy with what I believe was a very good quality laden draft. they finally stuck with the board (like last year for the most part) and came away with everyone high fiving eachother. they werent doing that last year or the year before, these guys actually got guys they had targeted in rounds lower than they wanted them in. That is a win, once free agency starts the d line and backfield will be filled in and Brent picked up in the supplemental draft last year was a good choice which should be considered a choice for this year really. I think this will be a good rookie class for our Boys.:starspin

No, the Jax trade was offered, the same trade that the Commanders took. We didn't accept. That one could have happened.

This whole concept, and the reason for this thread, is to see how well our ultimate mock, with full hindsight of who got picked where... how well does that match up with success in 4 years? Who on this board has the best mock draft skills? It's kind of a challenge.

That gamble of trading up, and back into the first would have worked, if this is the last NFL draft ever, as some have speculated. But I am glad that Jerry didn't get his way, just on principle.

but then you don't know if dallas would have picked those players, if those players would have been there, if another team would have traded to get a player and the entire draft would have been different. SO this is stupid. If your going to do it then you have to use the picks Dallas used and the way the draft went. You can't go by something that didn't happen because you never know what would have changed.

You have a valid point, but don't overthink it.

It's just for fun.

Don't like it...Carimi is not ready to step in and start at OT this year. Some people believe he'll be moved to OG anyway if he struggles at RT, and no one thinks he can play LT.

Rackley is also viewed as a long term project...don't like it.

Murray is guess work because there's no way to know who might have taken him when after he's off the board.

Garrett is building a certain type of offense...every NFL team looks for players who fit their schemes and play. Just like there's an ideal CB for the Tampa 2 and another for the pressing man to man (and they are seldom interchangeable), there are also guys with the right skills and footwork for zone blocking vs. man blocking, power running vs. better feet for getting to the 2nd level, etc.

It's never just about the value placed on players from their college production and combine measurables. They don't make their value charts and set up their boards based on the values we fans read about and base our own draft hopes on. Even when teams say they are drafting the best player available instead of filling needs, they are still really saying that they are selecting based on the value of the player within their system...period.

Example...I don't think we'd have ever taken CArimi unless it was in the latter rounds...he's an effort guy who battles, but he's not a movement guy, not an athletic lineman with great feet.

I also watch every pick when Dallas is on the clock, hoping my guys will be selected, but I accept the fact that my guy is solely based on college games I saw and draft reports I read...the team rates guys based on the skills they covet.
