How Dan Quinn will Use Micah Parsons

Since he was drafted, we have all kind of been debating how Dallas is going to play Micah. Wondering which of the three LB spots he’ll be at and how will they play to his natural ability as a pass rusher.

As you probably know, Parsons was a DE until he got to Penn State and he was an exceptional pass rusher. Ross Tucker, the ex-NFL offensive lineman who is from and lives in Parsons home town in Pennsylvania said recently while being interviewed that Micah was the best pass rusher in high school that he has ever seen. Parsons was good enough in fact for Penn State to give him a full ride scholarship after his fourth game as a high school Freshman. Freshman!

Anyway, after he was drafted both Quinn and McCarthy said in interviews that Parsons can play both “on the ball” and “off the ball”, which essentially means that he can play as a edge rusher and as a regular LB. I’ve been hoping that’s what they actually do with him because I think Parsons can be very impactful as a pass rusher and as a run and chase LB.

In the below video, Parsons answers a question about how he’ll be played and it kind of gives us an idea on where he will line up and help us start to piece together what it’s going to look like come September. It sounds like they’re truly going to use him both on the ball and off.

After the question (which you can’t really even hear), Parsons says:

We’re going to drop” and then he stops and changes what he was going to say. Then he says:

There’s third down packages that I’m going to be in. But, you know, on first and second down I’m going to be in the box, then on third down they’re going to find a way to get me to the QB… which I’m excited about. I think DQ is a great coordinator… one of the best ones, and he finds a way to get his best players in position to make plays.

That is exactly the way I want them to use Micah.

I think he was initially going to say that they were going to drop him down on the line of scrimmage and play him as an edge rusher, but that is speculation on my part. It makes sense though. However, he changes his wording to there being third down packages that he’s going to be in, which is just a less specific way of saying they’re going to make him an edge rusher.

When he says on first and second down he’ll be in the box means, at least for now, being the MLB because that’s where they’re practicing him.

Then he again mentions being a pass rusher on third down.

This is very good news because he can truly be a weapon if they move him around and take advantage of what he does well. It is just another indicator of them using Parsons exactly the way they should, which is smart.

I was thrilled when they drafted him… but I keep getting more and more excited at the possibilities.

Anyway, here is the video. The part I’m talking about is at about the 2:32 mark. Just move it there to hear him answer that question. Better yet, listen to the entire thing to see what all he has to say.

I would hope however he's used it just means #54 stays on the bench

What happens if he excels at the pass rusher role to the point it is clearly his best position?

Could he play OLB in a 3-4 front more?

My guess that in that case, he’d play a lot of SAM and/or LEO and go after the QB on a pretty much full time basis.

That is highly unlikely to happen though, IMO. With his elite speed and athleticism, Parsons is going to be very valuable at chasing down the ball. Need a spy on a QB like Hurts or Murray? Micah is your man. He literally moves like a CB but he’s in a LB body. His explosion is so great and with the way he runs, it’s a pretty safe bet that he’s going to always be in the thick of things. His change of direction and lateral movements truly are CB like. He gets to the sideline in a blink.

Micah is so physically talented that he’d have to not care to not be good at LB. He’s going to be everywhere.

If he proves to be really good at rushing the QB, they will almost certainly play him like he said in this video: He’ll be the MIKE (or possibly WILL) on early downs/short yardage plays and they’ll either blitz him through the A-gap or they’ll put him on the edge (SAM/LEO) and let him get after the QB on third downs/long yardage situations.

So, he can rush the passer from either an off the ball position like MIKE or he can do so as an edge. Either way he should be create big problems for opposing QB’s.

Understood, great explanation

Jaylon plays great roaming around the Line and having Jaylon and Parsons on the field at the same time with their speed could be scary the QB wont know which one is coming.
So many are down on Jaylon but I think that you are going to be surprised at Jaylons turnaround.

I would have been good with trading back and getting Collins, but Parsons brings so much more, and why this was a great pick,,, Im glad Horn and Surtain were both gone.
I liked Collins, because of his Neanderthal trait of seek and destroy, thats an old school smash LB, but Parsons is your modern era inside/outside LB that Quinn loves, and just like you say, his diversity and ability to run and hit with his size and speed should be a huge concern for opposition.
Jimmy would have coveted

He became the best LBer on our team the moment he was drafted lol... playing him at MLB makes a lot of sense— BUT Quinn also talked about running a lot of 3-4 looks

When we go 3-4– I think a NASTY crew at LB could be this:

LOLB Gregory
ILB LVE
ILB Parsons
ROLB Basham

Could also see Parsons blitzing from all over the formation and Quinn moving him around to exploit mismatches. Parsons running blitz games on the same side as DLaw or Gregory? Lots of potential

where’s Jaylon?

he’s our best LB.

Collins does not seek and destroy. He’s a much more finesse LB than Parsons. It’s not close

Agreed.

Sounds interesting for sure.

Does Neal and Cox man the nickel LB spots?

So front four could be Parsons, DLaw, Gregory, Gallimore.

Does DLaw move inside at times during nickel?

Replace LVE with Jaylon and you may have something there
