Since he was drafted, we have all kind of been debating how Dallas is going to play Micah. Wondering which of the three LB spots he’ll be at and how will they play to his natural ability as a pass rusher.
As you probably know, Parsons was a DE until he got to Penn State and he was an exceptional pass rusher. Ross Tucker, the ex-NFL offensive lineman who is from and lives in Parsons home town in Pennsylvania said recently while being interviewed that Micah was the best pass rusher in high school that he has ever seen. Parsons was good enough in fact for Penn State to give him a full ride scholarship after his fourth game as a high school Freshman. Freshman!
Anyway, after he was drafted both Quinn and McCarthy said in interviews that Parsons can play both “on the ball” and “off the ball”, which essentially means that he can play as a edge rusher and as a regular LB. I’ve been hoping that’s what they actually do with him because I think Parsons can be very impactful as a pass rusher and as a run and chase LB.
In the below video, Parsons answers a question about how he’ll be played and it kind of gives us an idea on where he will line up and help us start to piece together what it’s going to look like come September. It sounds like they’re truly going to use him both on the ball and off.
After the question (which you can’t really even hear), Parsons says:
“We’re going to drop” and then he stops and changes what he was going to say. Then he says:
“There’s third down packages that I’m going to be in. But, you know, on first and second down I’m going to be in the box, then on third down they’re going to find a way to get me to the QB… which I’m excited about. I think DQ is a great coordinator… one of the best ones, and he finds a way to get his best players in position to make plays.”

That is exactly the way I want them to use Micah.
I think he was initially going to say that they were going to drop him down on the line of scrimmage and play him as an edge rusher, but that is speculation on my part. It makes sense though. However, he changes his wording to there being third down packages that he’s going to be in, which is just a less specific way of saying they’re going to make him an edge rusher.
When he says on first and second down he’ll be in the box means, at least for now, being the MLB because that’s where they’re practicing him.
Then he again mentions being a pass rusher on third down.
This is very good news because he can truly be a weapon if they move him around and take advantage of what he does well. It is just another indicator of them using Parsons exactly the way they should, which is smart.
I was thrilled when they drafted him… but I keep getting more and more excited at the possibilities.
Anyway, here is the video. The part I’m talking about is at about the 2:32 mark. Just move it there to hear him answer that question. Better yet, listen to the entire thing to see what all he has to say.
