Here are some quotes from around the country as pundits weigh in on the cornerback crop about to burst upon the NFL.

"This is the best cornerback class in a long time, with as many as a dozen players landing first-round grades from teams this season. " -Dieter Kurtenbach, Fox Sports

"I can get through four rounds of quality cornerbacks and I've never been able to say that before." Mike Mayock, NFL.com

"The 2017 NFL Draft features the deepest group of cornerbacks and safeties that I've seen since I began scouting 14 years ago. I have 17 secondary players in my top 50 (10 cornerbacks and seven safeties), and I could make a case for a handful of other players to crack the list." -Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com

Think about that! There just might be a top 50 player available at our deepest area of need... not only in the third round, but perhaps even in the 4th round.

I really hope next year's draft is deep in defense like this one.

I'm not done rueing the 4 secondary players the Cowboys lost in free agency yet.

DEEP SIGH.

OK. Now, lets go get that young talent and rebuild the secondary into one we can be proud of.

I would like to think we come out of this draft with a starting CB and a starting SS that are both upgrades over what we had. Add in another rotational DE that can bring a little heat and all of a sudden this defense isn't so bad. Especially if Jaylon Smith is able to contribute and some of the past additions show some growth.

Sickest Draft depth in decade at DB .... and RB. WR and TE depth is certainly a viable product as well.

Cowboys would do well to, at least somewhat, stick within these perimeters of need.

Good to hear. I love the strategy. This is how great teams are built! Not by giving guys like Brandon Carr huge money!

I agree, I still have hope the kid can get squared away and contribute. If the Jones didnt they would've released him by now.

It'd be nice if he could contribute in the 2018 season but don't see him playing again. The dude is a total bonehead.

every year every year every draft has some players or sections are deep and awesome, and than reality hits. if anything the scouts and combine should start toning things down and start with the words, "we re sure we have NFL talent in the draft class" once i start hearing the buzz words, i start rolling my eyes. every player, no matter how great you tell me, is not going to work with every coach or every system. hell sometimes you get lucky and find a good one who does fit your system.

if the media wants to play honest, stop the buzz words and start just being honest. no matter the right ups, the videos are going to impress people that dont understand things. Bodies are going to meet the demand of the NFL and most wont hold up, than the mental aspect of the NFL game kicks in.

lets just look at the facts, the numbers , what we know and just realize, yea its hard to rank them and hard to say whos who, but everyone knows, from top to bottom, its a crap shoot. people who gamble, this is a heck of a gamble. Very few sure things in each draft class, and thats problem the most honest thing you ll hear about it.

Pro Football Weekly in their "The Way We Hear It" section, talked to scouts and GM's about the DB class and this is what they had to say:

GM on cornerback class – "It is the deepest group of corners I have seen since I came into the league." — Derick Hingle

Scout on Marlon Humphrey CB Alabama – "He’s physical and will run real fast but I don’t trust his ball skills."

On safety/linebacker Jabrill Peppers, Michigan – “Some say he has poor ball skills. Are they nuts? Have you seen the way he adjusts to passes and punts? He catches the ball very cleanly.”

Scout on Rasul Douglas CB – West Virginia– "I really like him, he can start for us right away."

On Safety Malik Hooker – “I sure hope his surgeries went well because he is the best safety in the last 10 years. Maybe he’ll fall to us now!”

On Michigan CB Channing Stribling – “He’s small and he doesn’t have speed, but he has the best ball skills of any corner in the draft.”

On Safety Lorenzo Jerome, St. Francis – “I never heard of St. Francis before. It’s out in the middle of nowhere but a great stop because this kid can play.”

I'm sure this played a big role in letting our secondary players walk.

Definitely. And time to burn off some of the age. Church 29, Carr 30...we'll need to get ready for Scandrick, 30. As a general rule DB's fall off in their late twenties.

I see guys like Kazee, Elder, Griffin, and Langley that are slotted as day 3 guys that could push to start for us, and definitely get in the rotation.

I would not mind at all if we end up with 2 CB's and a S from this draft.

I think Dak has made this strategy possible. Instead of paying old vets too much money because we have to try to win a Superbowl now, before our QB's body completely breaks down, we can build the right way.

The depth is overrated imo. Won't be easy to get a healthy starting CB better than Carroll at 60 imo.

Safety is a little better, but even then, if it's not 28 or 60 I'm not sure you're getting a significant day 1 contributor.

Obviously anything is possible and gems can be found later, but if drafting rookie upgrades to replace Carroll and Heath is really the strategy it means we are ignoring DE early imo. The front office clearly just has more faith in what is currently on the roster than me.

I don't agree with that. I think Montae Nicholson, Justin Evans and Marcus maye will be available at 60

There are 31 other teams that are seeing the same thing. Secondary is one of those position groups that teams need 5 or 6 guys that can play, would not shock me at all if we see a historic run on DBs within the first 2 rounds. It's easy to pull the trigger on a BPA DB
