After reading the sports writers act like our offense was all of sudden broken and all of the questions on how are the Cowboys going to replace TO's production I decided to do some analysis to see if they were right.

Looking at last years games
2008
wk Rush Pass Total
1 167 320 487 Browns 28 10 W
2 68 312 380 Philly 41 37 W
3 217 236 453 Packers 27 16 W
4 44 300 344 Commanders 24 26 L
5 198 175 373 Bengals 31 22 W
6 73 301 374 Cardinals 24 30 L
7 124 217 341 Rams 14 34 L
8 70 102 172 Tampa 13 9 W
9 81 102 183 NY 14 35 L
10 BYE Week
11 117 198 315 Commanders 14 10 W
12 74 334 408 49ers 35 22 W
13 116 331 447 Seahawks 34 9 W
14 95 194 289 Steelers 13 20 L
15 100 221 321 NY 20 8 W
16 92 235 327 Ravens 24 33 L
17 87 211 298 Philly 6 44 L
1723 3789 5512 362 365
Avg 107 236 344.5 22.6 22.8

If you look at the first 3 games of 2009, we have very similar #'s of total yards. What changes is the mix

2009
wk Rush Pass Total
1 118 344 462 Tampa 34 21 W
2 251 127 378 NY 31 33 L
3 212 237 449 Carolina 21 7 W

What we have done is to change the mix to be more balanced this year and less dependent on Romo. It looks like to me like this is a very good thing. We were too pass heavy last year!

So it appears to me that this year and last are pretty similar. The mix is more balanced and if you look at the NY game this year and the Philly game last year that we could have won or lost either of those games

Last year we were near the bottom in rushing attempts this year we rank 9th in attempts and rank 1st in yards running the ball

In the passing game in 08 we ranked 8th in passing attempts this season 27th in passing attempts yards per game passing we currently rank 14 and avg per attempt 4th

There is no question that we have a different rush/pass mix. The point I am making is that we have almost the same amount of points results as last year. There is no question that we have a more balanced rush/pass mix.

I agree just throwing that tid bit out there. I think Dallas is showing a good mixture and it is showing positive results I think as the season goes I think we will see more things being added to the offense. For the last few years we have relied on the passing game this is a bit different for the Cowboys to lean on the rush as much as we currently have it was 2005 when we last avg this many runs per game

Do a pass/run ratio on just the first half and then the second half of games.

We always come out passing at around a 2/3 clip for the most part.

I just did a little bit more research on it....last week, in the first half, we did...however, in the first two games it wasn't quite as bad.

Tampa bay was 13 rushes to 17 passes...
N.Y. was 15 rushes to 20 passes
Carolina was the one where we were heavy on the pass in the first half...

So it wasn't as bad as I previously thought.

Although I still believe that we passed more than we should have in the first two games.

See my latest thread on why I believe that....Entitled "This team is built to run".

The reason I posted the thread was to point out that while the offense is different than last year, it is actually resulting in a pretty similar end result. My guess is if we took a poll at the end of the season that we would have seen the results be something like:

Cowboys should run more - 75%
Put the game in Romo's hands - 25%

My suspicion is that while the sports writers are whinning about how bad this offense looks and the restraining of Romo, Wade and JG are pleased because this is exactly what they were hoping the results of the off season changes would be.
