How do they fix it? Looking ahead

Should have been in the Roquan Smith conversation at the trade deadline, but they sat on their hands. Idiots.

I just wish we had an offensive coordinator that took the defence into account. This offence leaves the defence vulnerable. The O started with 2 3 and outs? They got pass happy instead of stuck to what was working, running the ball. It’s almost like Jerry has told the coaches to make Dak the focal point of the offence? Because he doesn’t want to look foolish for over paying Dak.

I understand that but I’m just trying to focus on improving the run defense and if the problem is personnel, coaching, scheme, or effort and if anybody had thoughts on which positions specifically need to be upgraded/ changed…….but I do recognize that the offense has its issues too. If the passing or rushing ranked 29th I’d expect a similar thread on that subject

For the most part, I don’t think we need more talented players. Even our DTs are talented. Stopping the run does not demand having monster DTs that destroy the line of scrimmage. The problem, as I see it, is 2-fold.
  1. Defenders all along the LOS, especially the DEs, buying into the whole greatest pass rush in the NFL thing and NOT playing disciplined football, including gap responsibilities.
  2. Currently, we do not have even 1 LB who can step up and stop a big, strong RB like some we’ve been facing. They also cannot fill a gap, taking on blockers, and make a RB run laterally. LVE is the closest thing we have to that, and he came in originally as a coverage LB e placing Sean Lee on the outside. Now he doesn’t really have the sideline to sideline speed, and our other LBs, including Parsons, don’t have that strong thumper mentality….they are all speedy guys who were used differently in college.
It seems we have a very fast defense where most players are speedy playmakers with almost no one who can sacrifice body and glory to create opportunities for others.

Add to that the fact that Quinn loves his nickel and almost never puts 3 LBs on the field together.

This question isn’t a knee jerk reaction to just a single game. This defense has been getting gashed by the run all season and it’s not improved no matter what scheme is being utilized.

So the question is , “what roster positions. ,specifically, have to be addressed via the draft and free agency to balance out the disparity between the pass and rush defense?

We are aware of the offenses issues of inconsistency but for this thread I’d like to just hear about the defensive side of the ball and how to fix it, because I think its obviously beyond repairing this season.

too late. They had an entire off season and did nothing.

that’s exactly why I started this thread. I’m trying to figure out exactly what some of our fans are seeing when they say that our team will finish 12-5. I’m logically not seeing it based on your exact assertions, which I agree with

There’s some here that are completely blind as to what’s going on because they’re homers. I saw a fan on here after the game yesterday still talking Super Bowl. If Philly wins tonight the Cowboys will be three games back and will be battling for a wildcard. The problem with trying to gain a wildcard spot is the Cowboys three losses are all conference losses which factor into tiebreakers. The Cowboys will lose tiebreakers to Green Bay and Tampa. If they lose to Minnesota next week that will be another conference loss. The wheels are likely to come off if we lose next week. We’ve gotten to the point in the season where you have to start playing your best football and once again it’s looking like the Cowboys best football may have come and gone.

Yep.

Boy, a prime pre purple drank Rolando McClain would be an incredible addition to the linebacker unit.

My question is why both the offense and the defense can't play well at the same time? Earlier in the year, the defense did not allow teams to get over 20 points. The offense was barely scoring that but we were winning. Now, the offense is scoring but the defense is slowly showing its weaknesses. How can they fix that?

so far, from the posters comments , it sounds like a combination of personnel desire/discipline/smarts and perhaps 2-3 players to be upgraded. It will be interesting to see if next years draft and Free agency moves will reflect this sentiment.

Maybe the opposite of what you might expect.

They often get gashed by the run because they're stunting to create a better pass rush.

If they pass rush better without stunting, then the run defense would improve.

I have to think that Quinn is beyond frustrated, unless he assured his GM that he’s got all the ingredients he needs because right now it’s looking like a tossed salad

We're going to keep seeing it. If they're picking up 3-4 yards a run, that gives them 3rd and short every time. Now play action on 2nd and 5 or 3rd and short is a killer. Half the time they are getting the first down on just the two runs.

We're going to see it against the Vikings next week. Our DC has to see this. If he can't fix it, O'well.

1. Never ever use Micah mainly at off ball LB. Ever. I don't care how clever you think you are with the matchup.

Damone Clark and Cox to start. Get some speedy youth in there. People say Cox was a coverage LB but all he did was makes TFL’s at LSU. He also made an amazing play on Daniel Jones last year where he knocked him out with a concussion.

Speed kills.

First thing this team needs to do is sit Parsons down and let that franchise LB heal up. They are going to ruin him. That's how to improve this defense. Dak is getting 49 mil next year so it's going to have to be the draft to get Parsons help.

The run defense has gotten worse since they added Hankins. Not saying he’s the problem, just pointing out that the run defense has gotten worse. Don’t see this being fixable until the offseason and even then I’m not sure they’ll get it fixed because it was a problem last season and in previous seasons. It’s become a very troubling ongoing issue.
How many snaps did he even play yesterday?

I don’t know how many snaps he played. The biggest problem has been the outside runs. We have players that can’t get off blocks. Parsons has gotten sack happy and has overrun some plays.
