How do we avoid another giant whiff in free agency?

Root for another team ... because I highly doubt we'll sign anyone other than other teams garbage...

But you rambled on about how FA results in bloated, bad contracts. That's simply not true if done wisely and it's a convenient excuse made to defend the crap plan we have executed the last couple of years.
The reason JJ won’t do it is the cap issues it helped a little to create. Romo, Witten, etc. contracts were larger issues but we have not yet gotten our $$ worth for it so far. I am trying to agree with you if you will let me arrive at that spot using different facts or opinions.

And some folks aren't competitive and just don't mind losing. That's ok because It takes all kinds of people to form a complete fandom. Our favorite team hasn't won anything in almost 25 years. 1/3 of the entire fan base has never seen The Boys compete for even an NFC championship. That's CRAZY!! Can you imagine being the fans of a franchise like the Browns, Bills, or Bengals? Wait, WE ARE THAT FAN.

Endless whining and moaning is expected because after a quarter of a century of watching the "brilliant" moves of guys like Jerry, SJ, Will, Garret, etc.. we are still cheering for a loser each and every year....

I haven't heard any of this before. Or I've heard it 500x. One of these.

For me...I think the team was run very poorly for a long, long time but in the past 2-4 years has been run a lot smarter. We'll see if it that translates to championship results.

He isn’t.

I still think we should hold off on huge signings for one more season until we see how Dak does.
The only tempting one is admittedly Earl Thomas who I would make an exception for seeing as our whole secondary are on rookie deals. But hear you, if he proves to be the real deal, we can forecast the cap options with better certainty and his own deal when needed. But if we tag DLaw (I would), that $ would be hard to come by.

Step two: use the dumpster for throwing away trash, do not bring a shopping cart.

Partial post of the week!!! Very well said.

We need to spend a little money this offseason in FA. Possibly finding our next LaRoi Glover and the late Terry Glenn would go a long way.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong! To W-H-I-F-F-F-F-F-F-F-F....you have to swing for the fences. The Cowboys wisely avoided doing that. They barely played free agency--which was the right call. They've stacked up the draft on compensatory picks by letting some guys walk.... and now have a talented young secondary for years.

The season didn't turn out because of suspensions, injuries and a bit of decline with Dak. Personnel decisions--with just a couple of exceptions--were nothing short of brilliant. Yes...brilliant.

This endless whining, moaning is mindless and foolish. It's also such a BORE.
Bump!

The team is not going to spend big dollars in FA. I just don't see it. I mean, I get it. We have some of the best players in the league coming up on contracts and we really can't afford to simply throw money away. I understand that. I also understand that we spent about 6 years in Cap Hell in the early 2000s, and I mean serious Cap Strap, where we could barely afford to sign a full roster. I understand why the team manages the cap so closely. The real problem is that if you are going to manage that way, then you gotta draft well and develop players. You have to understand what you are drafting. The failure of this team was the evaluation of guys like Green and others we counted on to play a key role in this years team. I never thought we had a swing tackle on the roster and it turns out, we didn't. That failure, IMO, was bigger then the lose of Zeke or the play of Dak IMO. The failure of this team is not in the failure to sign big time FAs. The failure was the decision to stick with what we had at Swing Tackle. We should have either drafted somebody who could actually play the position or, spent some money signing somebody for a short, big money contract that could step in and actually play.

To me, that's the real failure and that has to happen way before the season ever starts.
