How do you tell the difference between an upper case I and a lower case L?

In a Web address, how do you tell the difference between an upper case I and a lower case L?

If there are other letters nearby, go with whatever case those are. If not, assume it's capitalized. Just my opinion.

What's the usage here? Are web addresses generally all in lowercase?

If there's some way of converting the font to a serif font (like Courier) you'll be able to tell because the capital I will have those bars on the top and the bottom. If I'm on my PC, I'll just copy the text to my word processor and chose Courier. If it's on a phone, it's harder to do, but probably possible.
