How good can the Cowboys' Defense be in 2009?

I really like what we've done in the Secondary this off-season, specifically cutting R Williams (though I have to admit he was one of my favorite Cowboys early on in his career) and bringing in Sensabaugh.

With R Williams injured last season and K Davis playing his spot, I sometimes felt our defense had 10 1/2 guys playing instead of 11. Don't get me wrong, I think K Davis played his heart out, but he's isn't starting quality. And for that matter, R Williams confidence in coverage didn't seemed to return.

I'm fine with our 3 starting CBs as well, though I hope all 3 hold up because I'm a bit wary of Ball. I think Mickens will be a good CB in time, and maybe he will get some reps as the season progresses in certain packages.

If our Secondary remains healthy, I think our starters and nickel/dime players should be a clear improvement over last season - mainly due to Sensabaugh and the continued progress of Jenkins and Scandrick.

As for our LBs, I suppose the two main questions are whether Brooking still has enough left in the tank, and whether Spencer continues to improve. My hope is that Brooking has at least enough in the tank to play 1st and 2nd down, and that possbily by end of the regular season J Williams can take a few reps as well to rest/rotate Brooking when necessary.

I think Spencer will be fine. Let's hope he remains healthy. Also, Wade seems particularly keen on Spencer as per the OTAs PCs.

I also really like what we did in the Draft by drafting 4 LBs. I think each of the 4 LBs can play a role in 2010, if not this year. I suspect we will see our 2 OLB draft picks play this year in our defensive packages, and I think J Williams will be getting in reps by end of the season. Hodge may have the best shot of contributing right away on passing downs given that he's more used to playing in space.

As for the DL (similar to our Secondary), I like our starters. Behind our starters, I'm not as sure, especially regarding the NT position. I can only assume that Wade really likes Siavii since we didn't trade, draft, or pick up a reserve NT this off-season. At DE, I'd like to see Hatcher do a bit more as well, because I think he's got the talent. He just needs to put it all together this season. I'm really looking forward to watching Dixon in TC and pre-season. I think he may have a future with the Cowboys.

All in all, I like our starters on defense. When the main questions are concerning the reserves, then you know you've got a pretty good defense, IMO.

I guess I would say that our biggest question mark on Defense on a relative basis (i.e., between the Secondary, LBs, and DL positions) is on the DL, simply because we have to see how Siavii plays. I'm assuming he's the guy Wade is counting on to back Ratliff.

I think our D will be quicker.

D Line - Jay Ratliff plays with heart every play so no problem there. Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, and Jason Hatcher should all be playing for contracts (I know Canty didn't do anything in his contract year). Guys like Marcus Dixon and Junior Siavii should be hungry. Igor has his contract but I'm guessing he has something to prove after the way he finished in San Diego.

Linebackers - Ware and James are self-motivators so no worries there. Keith Brooking is a worker. Anthony Spencer and Bobby Carpenter are question marks but it's pretty much now or never for both of them. Young guns Jason Williams, Brandon Williams, and Victor Butler will be eager to show what they can do and they will be flying to the ball.

Secondary - If TNew is healthy, no issues. He's a lockdown corner. Jenkins and Scandrick know they are in competition so they will be bringing it. Hopefully someone fools Ken Hamlin into thinking it's 2007 again. Sensabaugh is playing for a bigger contract. Mike Hamlin, DeAngelo Smith, and Mike Mickens will be looking to establish themselves.

Good post. I agree with most of it.

I dont know what we have in Sensabaugh, although we do know he will be an upgrade from Williams in coverage...and that is the main goal of a safety.

I as well like our secondary, although Newman needs to stay healthy. Hasnt happened lately.

Same with Spencer. He has the talent, but he needs to stay healthy. If so, he can have a 10 sack season.

On the line, I think our depth is underrated. Sivaii is unknown, but behind them we have quality depth in Hatcher and Bowen, both of which have done a decent job, and will be their 3rd year, so I'm hoping they really improve and we can have a nice, fresh Dline rotation. It all starts up front, and if we can have talented bodies staying fresh, this will go a long ways towards helping our defense in 09

I fully expect our late season defense to continue, and I want to be in the top 5 in scoring defense and rushing defense, and top 3 in sacks and top 10 in turnovers.

It's going to be exciting. One the one hand, our lack of depth at some spots and all these young guys scare the bejeezus out of me. On the other, I do think Wade has a good eye for defensive talent -- and he certainly has the experience -- so if he thinks these young guys can play and/or are upgrades, then they probably are.

I actually can't wait to see how Siavii does. Even Mosley said he looks absolutely massive out there at NT. If he's over his maturity issues, we could have a guy who is plenty good enough to be a backup.

But going into this year will be like walking a tightrope with no net. Scary but exciting at the same time. I can't wait.

Faster, stronger, and more fluid. Sensabaugh and Spencer immediately upgrade those two positions with freakishly athletic players.

A healthy Newman and Hamlin will help. Scandrick and Jenkins are only going to get better. Mike Hamlin is also a very nice addition to our secondary, steal of the draft IMO.

Brooking isn't quite as washed up as many believe.

And our defense is only going to get better because our special teams will easily be our most improved unit next year. They will get better field position and our offense won't consistenly put them in bad spots like we did down the stretch last year.

I disagree with Spencer being a question mark. He's no where close to being in the same category or position as Carpenter.

I don't think many fans realize how much PT he was pulling from Ellis towards the end of last year. He can play ball in this league. No question.

You are right, didn't mean to imply that they were equal question marks.

Spencer has some minor injury issues and possibly some maturity issues. At the same time, he has shown a lot more on the field than Carpenter has (and in one less season than Carpenter has played). I said now or never because they drafted two OLB's this year and I think Spencer has to produce to keep those guys from taking his job.

Bobby has to embrace the physical aspect of the game. I was watching Hard Knocks again and I had forgotten how they were all gushing over Carpenter's speed and athleticism. I still think he can turn it around. I want to see him flying around out there. His speed is something that can help us (Bradie is sloooooow). Just get out there and throw that 248 lbs. around.

Our weak spots on defense are at NT and Mike with a smaller question mark at the Sam.

Ratliff is fine for Wade's base defense. He does not cover as well though. I assume they think they have enough on the roster for the 10 plays a game we might need a big NT.

I think our DBs are ok with Sensabaugh added to the mix.

Our starting Mike is probably adequate+ for 2 downs. We have a hole at Nickel LB right now. They don't seem too upset over it so I trust they think they've got this covered. Hope it's not like Johnson last year.

Well we are having the #1 secondary in the league. That's a given. We are also leading the league in takeways on defense also.

slate, the secondary is only as good as the pass rush. Spencer must come up huge or you can forget it.

If the backbiting will stop...the team will gell.

That's what I'm hoping for.

;)

It's there for the taking...

Hey C-Lab, do you have a link or a pic? I hope its mostly muscle instead of the extra flab that Olshansky's packing.

You have a link to these pics of Olshansky? I've heard this several times, but I was using my friends POS PC for the last week or so, and it didn't have the plugins for video or images that I needed to view them.
