Twitter: How good was Witten?

I don't think it's a struggle at all to put one of the best TEs in history into the hall of fame. Pro Football reference provides a pretty good predictor as well. They have him 6th all-time. He was really good into his early 30s and even when he got a couple steps slower he was still a stellar blocker and sneaky pass catcher.

Witten's problem is timing. Gronk and Gates are past him on the HOF Monitor, and they're all due in the next 5 years.

Worse, Kelce is gaining on Witten. By the time he's eligible, Kelce may pass him.

Witten probably doesn't make it for a while.

IMO Witten is HOF worthy but TEs rarely get in 1st year of eligibility.

Unless they are Tony Gonzales.
Not sure why people don't grasp how hard it is for a TE to be first ballot

Jerry and his decade long HC experiment Jason Garrett wasted so much talent. It's a damn shame.
Just witness how we are performing with a backup QB. When Garrett was the HC...it was curtains when Romo got hurt.

No. First ballot is for game changers.

Maybe on your ballot. He made a lot of great plays, put up numbers and helped us win games. Plus we could count on him every Sunday to play. All fans on this board did was bash him at the end of his career because he declined. He was one of the all-time great Cowboys. He’ll be a first ballot Hall of Famer and you can book it!

Witten has a HOF problem.

His retirement is sandwiched between Gates and Gronk.

Arguably they should all make it, even first ballot, but I don't see them putting in 3 TEs in 4 years.

If Gates gets in, then the HOF committee will be looking at Witten and Gronk coming up in consecutive years, and Gronk is going 1st ballot.
If Gates doesn't get it, do they let Witten in before Gates and Gronk? Doubt that.

Of the 3, I'd put Witten 3rd priority, and given they're all dropping at the same time, Witten gets pushed out into the future,
He’s better than gates. Here’s ran 2 routes. He could t block. Wittenberg was less hyped but better, more consistent and did it longer.

Old heads believe undoubtedly that Novacek was the better tight end despite the numbers

Witten was great in his early years. His rookie year he played with a broken Jaw. Later in his career he was pretty much a blocking tight end and good for picking up four yards on 3rd and 6. He should be in the ring of honor because of how popular he was. I struggle with HOF because there was no playoff success with the teams he was on.
The list I can come up with for great players on so-so teams is incredibly long.

Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Jason Witten how many push ups he could do and Jason Witten replied "all of them."

Witten is a Lock for the Hall of Fame. He is second all time in catches by a TE. He is ahead of Gronk and Kelce.

We wouldn’t stop gushing over him if he played in Philadelphia

Not really There are teams I dislike but always respect great players and recognize them as such no matter which team they played for.

As good as Travis Kelce is, Witten still has better numbers by a lot.

2015-2020 Witten had 20 1st downs out of 25 catches on 3rd and 4-6 yrds!
