How do you feel about this defense? Do you think they'll be:

Top 5
Top 10

Horrible

to be honest, im excited about Kris Richards, so i dont know if the defense as a whole will be good, but im hoping he changes how the dbs play.

If healthy I definitly see them top 5. I also believe we will see the best secondary play with Richards running the show.

For the first time in a while I think it will be hard to pass on Dallas defense.

Yeah, I feel pretty good about this defense. We saw flashes last year... I think we have people in place now, that want to win, and want to be the best. If we aren't one of the top 5, I will actually be let down on that one.

Offense on the other hand... who knows.

We have a ton of young talent. Lots of second year guys should be improved.

If Sean Lee stays healthy, I think this at worst a top 10 defense.

I hate to be that guy, but if we were to somehow get Earl Thomas, he bumps this up to a top 3 defense.

As is, average at best.

With ET, above average at worst.

They need to find a way.

I think the defense will start slow but improve over the course of the season.

A lot will depend on how well the offense can control the ball.

I think they can be a top 10 but need to see more turnover especially ints.

Middle of the pack Top 15 Defense.

Still need a NT, S and OLB.

It's getting better. We need to add another vet LB and another option at S. Then tell me how many games Sean Lee plays and I'll have an answer. I'd think we'd be top-10 in terms of points/defensive series right now. Barely. We do have some playmakers on that side of the ball developing. Finally.

Biggest problem last year was giving up 3rd down conversions - only three teams were worse. More early stops equals better field position.

Should be top 10.

The last 4 years they kept climbing the ranks.
2016 really looked good as for PPG becasue of the ball control on offense.
2017 YPG improved and I believed we were what 8th? But PPG dropped

So we should be top 10, but won’t go as far to say top 5 or even say top 8 until we see it on the field. But I don’t see a drop to below 12, unless other teams improve that much more than us.

They might have potential to be top 10 or more depending on DL which looks to be the best we’ve had in years.

If it can cause disruption and havoc at the LOS it should lend much support to our secondary and coverage while creating more turnovers.

Last years rankings:

Yards allowed - 8th
Points allowed - 13th

Obviously health plays a big role in this, but on paper they look to be more talented than last year and a lot of those young guys who were thrown into the fire now have some experience under their belt. I don't think it's unreasonable to say they could have a top 10 unit. I'd also say Jaylon Smith and Randy Gregory are giant wild cards that could propel them even further, although I'm not hedging any bets on that. If those two pan out and play to their potential, the front 7 would be the best we've had in a long time.

D Line rotation is deep.
LB play should be better but is relying on health (Lee and Jaylon) and a quick transition (LVE).
CB play should be good.
S play is a giant question mark.

As of now, I feel like this defense will be similar to 2016's. Benefits from a great running game, not on the field a lot, but can't make crucial stops when it matters most, especially defending the deep ball. Can't keep putting JAGs at safety and then act surprised when great QBs take advantage in critical moments.
