How good would the 92 Cowboys be if they played in the modern day NFL?

Time travel scenarios....

Great discussion for a football forum.

True story. A uncle of mine had played on a NFL national championship team. Back then when my uncle played, he also worked "full time" at another job to make ends meet for his family.

My uncle played in the 1930's.

Honestly, who the Frick cares per the OP's question?

I bet the number of NFL players that run sub 4.4 forty times in 2022 is nearly 10 times the number in 1992 (5x at minimum)
Sure, the elite of the elite might be the same, but the across-the-board talent, speed, and strength as much broader now.

And the skill position players...even linebackers...have much better ball skills overall. Not talking very top guys, but on average.
Playing 7 on 7 for so many years probably helped.

I think those same players from 92 would be better now than they were then, but no way to prove it.
Agreed 100% on your first point. There are more faster players in today's game. Not necessarily faster players, just more of them. Also don't forget, the skilled positions would be wearing those gloves they wear today. :)

For linebackers, although what you say is true, I find that a lot of their success has to do with what they have between their ears. I'm just not sure where the cutoff point is. At some point the talent level has to peak.

Overall everything you said is true. I'm just not sure if the Cowboys had enough of those players on that team. Because if you remember, teams couldn't run those basic old screen plays anymore in the 90s. DLineman were getting too fast. But that might be late 90s, I forget now.

Still the best combination of physicality and speed on both sides of the ball that the NFL has ever seen

Plus they were just plain nasty and had a real edge to them

They'd be dominant in any era

Would they still be a juggernaut in the current NFL?
Only if you can clone Paul Tagliabue and make him the commissioner...

Goodell would ban Erik Williams and Charles Haley for life.

Mike Irvin would fare much better.

There’s been a number of rule changes since the 90s and everything is geared toward passing these days. With that being said everything it took to win then could win today. The 90s teams had everything it took to be great today. A Hall of Fame QB, WR and RB. They had a massive road grading OL. A great defense with a fierce pass rush. It’s all about adjusting to the rule changes.

They were big string fast for their era but not necessarily this one.

The rules have also changed so they cant play the same, esp on defense.

Team building is entirely different with the cap.

Now if you hive guys like irving the same trainibg as what the new guys get and he will absolutely dominate still. Guys like him have what many people lack and thats the drive to get better, work longer harder etc.

Every other play in 1992 NFC Championship game would have called a personal foul today. Some SERIOUS hitting goin' on...

It's silly. I don't do hypotheticals... but I'll play. That was perhaps the best OL in the history of the NFL. Plus you had a QB that did not turn the ball over and interceptions were rare. We went (traveled) to all three Super Bowls in the '90s. I hope you kids get to experience the thrill of seeing your team win a Super Bowl.

Are these great Cowboys teams playing with the old rules or the new rules? That would be a factor. If we are playing today’s rules I’m not so sure about the 90s teams dominating.

I was talking to my son about this yesterday. He didn’t get to see how great those teams were back then. I told him they would’ve steamrolled all those championship Patriots teams. I explained to him how everything changed with free agency.

I think Harper signed a big free agent deal with Tampa to be their number one receiver and he wasn't cut out to be a number one.
Yup, much different when you get all the attention. He was prefect for that Dallas team. The threat of the run game and then Irvin and Novacek allowed Harper a lot of one on one matchups. He wasn't cut out to beat double teams he was more of a deep threat. I'm sure whoever was the QB for the Bucs at the time didn't help either.

Cant really project like that.
All the 90s players would be probably be stronger and faster if they were born and raised 30 years later.
its a different world with different training, diet…. and different rules

But it‘s harder, in general, to dominate now because there is so much more overall talent coming in from colleges acrossthe country.
not impossible though
Another example of the "bigger, faster, stronger" myth.

Nobody today is faster than Bob Hayes who's prime was in the 1960s.

Nobody is bigger than Kevin Gogan who played in the 90s.

Nobody is stronger than Larry Allen who played in the 90s as well.

That's three meme busters just from our own team.
