Cowpoke is actually correct. He wasn't known as John Wayne while at USC. That wasn't until Raoul Walsh cast him in "The Big Trail."

You can add the middle name Michael to the list. There appears to be evidence his middle name was changed several times.

Anyone know where he got the nickname Duke?

I thought the OP was referring to the guy on the horse. Looks a little like Wayne in "Rooster Cogburn."

it has something to do with him being in a movie and his screen name being after a war general but the name was to something (like to french or something) and the director i believe sugguested John Wayne over "whatever" wayne....right?

Yes sir. The dog's name was Duke and peopel took to calling them Big Duke and Little Duke. Some of his early movies were cast as Duke Wayne.
