Opening night against the Gints... we win the toss but defer to the second half. folk booms the kickoff through the end zone for a touchback. Gints have the ball on the 20... Wade turns to the defense assembled around him and says "unleash hell". :dissgint:

Awesome imagination......and it could happen

Are you allowed to "defer" in the pros? You don't ever see a team do that.

I thought it was more of a college rule.

we dont have to worry about tiki..its game over for the giants eli is getting picked off twice write it down

What is so great about a touchback? They get the ball on the 20. I would rather have the ball land two yards inside the end zone. The returner hesitates a split-second before choosing to run it out, then gets tackled inside the 10.

It happens every once in a while.I'd defer most every time if I were calling the shots. Take the ball first in the second half with either the opportunity to get back in the game or to take control of the game depending on the situation.

I have seen it done a few times when there was a strong wind. The team winning the coin toss defers so they can make the other team's offense play into the wind.

It is not deferring in the pros, it is choosing to kick rather than receive. Landry did it in 1981 against the Giants because of the wind.

i tend to agree with you Lurker, i would rather see the returner catch the ball around the goal line because i'm so looking forward to seeing Deon Anderson dicapitate somebody:D

I see week 1 of the season as several weeks away from now. I'm just looking forward to training camp and pre-season and hope we get through it injury free. Then I'll look to week 1 of the season. :laugh2:

I don't believe there is a "defer" in Pro Football.

If you win the toss, and elect to kick off, the other team gets to choose what they want to do to start the 2nd half.

I am sure they would want the ball in most cases.

So if you win the toss and kickoff to start the game, you will kickoff to start the second half also.

Not good strategy.

Yup.You're right. Thanks for clearing that up.

I will be going to opening night game. Can't wait to see how NY tries to defend against the Freak (Ware) and the Monster (Spencer). 2 sacks each opening night.
