After 2 pre season games how is Garrett doing with his game mngmt. Keeping in mind it's pre season. Also, late in the game, when he threw the red flag to challenge a call. Seems like he didn't know the rule that you can't challenge a play that is automatically reviewable. I think it cost the team that challenge plus loss of a time out plus fifteen yards. Not sure, but at least two of the three. That call by him is something a Head Coach should know and could have cost a game with the penalties that were applied.

Your thoughts.

If the refs didn't blow the call Garrett wouldn't have thrown the flag.

He's not the only coach that has done that so far this preseason. It's one of those rule changes that will take a bit of time to set in, but yeah, that's something every coach has to know. As for game management, thought he did a pretty good job at the end of the game last night.

The play that the OP is talking about was in the 4th quarter when McGee was hit from behind. For some completely unknown reason Garrett threw a challenge flag, saying McGee's arm was going forward -which it was. But it didn't matter, the ball went backwards. Why doesn't our coach know that a backwards pass is still a live ball?

a coach needs to know the new rules, its just unacceptable.I am shocked Callahan or someone else didnt chime in that he couldnt challenge that.

Garrett challenged a fumble ruling when all turnovers are automatically reviewed now. Because of the challenge we received an unsportsmanlike penalty and lost a timeout.

The refs blew the call because McGoo's arm did go forward and even after the review they got it wrong.

That new rule the NFL made is stupid. Godell is quickly approaching Stern as the worst commissioner in sports.

Obviously you and Garrett don't get it, if the ball goes backwards it doesn't matter what the QB's arm does, it's a live ball. Football 101

why is it stupid?.it actually helps teams by preserving their challenges.

less than 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter we completed a pass to the 7 or 8 yd line. we had 2 timeouts remaining but instead Carpenter ran up and spiked the ball costing us a down.

Was this the appropriate decision? Why not use a timeout there?

It is preseason. It is a new rule. Sometimes stuff happens.

So far, on the totem pole of coaching greatness and game management, Jason is sharing a space with Mike Singletary. Can't really see a time when Jason will discover that all his wicked smart thinkin' just ain't workin'.

The Chargers looked like they were playing padless 7 on 7 drills by the 3rd quarter. Its was like a cat toying with a stunned mouse. I think Norv just took it easy so Jason could try out some stuff on offense.

Defense looked good though. Cb Butler, Hamilton, ILBs were all playing fast.

Because we were down at the time by two scores, one needing a two point conversion.

There was 54 seconds left on the clock when we scored - Carpenter to Harris.

We would have needed those time outs if we received an onside kick.

The spike was the smart thing to do.

If you hadn't noticed, Norv kept his backups out there for the entire second half. While Orton and the 2s got work right before the end of the 1st half, our 3s played the second half against the Chargers 2s. Oh and btw our 2s scored on their 1st team defense.

Exactly.

So how exactly did Norv take it easy on us? The Chargers blitzed us and the line picked it up ok. They ran alot of 4 man rushes for the most part, but so did we.

It's a pre-season game. The mine against yours mindset ignores that they will call the game differently if it counted.

I was very annoyed that he didn't goto bat on the refs for Holmes on the terrible"interception" call.

The refs blew the call by awarding the Chargers the ball AFTER the personal foul, and Garrett should have been ripping them a new one. Your player just got hit high, and they awarded the other team the ball. Pre-season or not, he should have went wild.
