Unfortunately everyone caught up to the flex defense by the 80s and Landry had a tough time parting ways with it. Even his own players pleaded with him to do away with it.

The "flex" absolutely worked for a while then over time and video tape teams figured out how to attack. Still good ol days IMO.

It freed up the middle linebacker to scrape down the line. It still came down to excellent DT play from Lilly, et al to get there.

The histories of the front usually do a good job highlighting the DT's importance vs the power run game. Cutbacks meet Mazi Smith.

It was very effective during the 60s and 70s but by the 80s it wasn’t working against the young, innovative offensive minds. The game was changing and Landry was stuck in the past.
