How long can we keep Garrett?

With Jason Garrett showing what he can do as an OC, there are bound to be some teams next offseason in search of a coach who will give him a close look. People are saying that Garrett is the next in line to coach the Boys after the Wade Phillips era is over, but what if he has the opportunity to move up to a head coaching position elsewhere before Wade is ready to go? What do you think Jerry will do?

If things go well this year we should give up big money for him to stay on as OC. And if things ever go south with Wade, Jason can take over. I dont know what the rush is for him.

Garrett will wait for the Cowboys to give him a position... so maybe two to three years. That would be the maximum he should wait anyways. Hopefully Jerrah will be smart enough to offer him a position unlike the way we handled the Payton situation.

Then again similar to BP and Payton, it would be odd to fire Phillips and give Garret the position if we are still winning and in contention. Everything will work itself out.

Wade seems to have these guys believing and on the right track, but he aint getting any younger. I say he'll be our head coach 3 or 4 years, regardless of success level, and then Garrett takes over. RedBall is a smart man. He knows he will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, a high-profile, dream job indeed. And of course he will get paid.

I think after Wade wins the superbowl this year he goes out on top and then its Garret's team....

I think if we really wanted to keep Peyton we could have but the question is whether he was ready to get from under Bill Parcells.

we tell wade he's our D coordinator, pay him nicely, and we all move on.

but let's wait till the year is up and let's see who wants to be where.

Garrett is under contract I believe Jerry has the right to refuse other teams to talk to him, does he not?

for OC.

if for HC he can always move up. you can't stop someone from advancing.

I know another team can hire him as long as he's being premoted (from OC to head coach) but doesn't Jerry have the right to say "you can't talk to him, so you'll have to hire him without interviewing him" or something like that?

I remember the Dolphins doing something similier to other teams until they granted us premission to talk to him.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't see Wade retiring anytime soon. He seems pretty energetic to me. It's a complete 180 from Bill Parcells who always looked sick after a game. Plus, if we're successful, why would we change?

Also, I would think Garrett would hang around for this job to open before he'd run off somewhere else and I'm sure Jerry would be more than willing to pay him quite a bit to hang around.

in the end it really won't matter what wade wants.

his D is still coming together.

garretts O just ripped the #1 D a new hole.

if this keeps up he'll be the hottest name in the NFL and have several offers. should that happen we either promo him THEN or lose him.

will he choose to stay just because? doubt it. not the way things work.

Jerry will have to pay him BIG bucks to remaing co-ordinator until Wade steps down otherwise he is as good as gone....I'll bet the Giants would be first in line.

If I am Jerry and have waited all this time to get him as a coach...I make him an offer he can not refuse and sign him up.
I am not a fan of Danny Synder but I would take a page out of his playbook and sign Garrett to big time money and make sure he knows he is next in line.
Garrett is going to be the next great coach in this league.

Jason GArrett is smart.
He knows he has to establish a good track record here before he becomes a HC somewhere else.
He also knows all he has to do is do his job and bide his time and he could be coach -- long term -- of the Dallas Cowboys
If there is a more prestigious one, i have not heard of it and Garrett will stay and prosper.

When Jerry gives him a huge contract and promises him the head coaching gig after Wade leaves, it's a no-brainer for Jason Garrett. Why would he leave a Pro-Bowl QB in the prime of his career, an explosive offense, a stellar defense (by the time Wade retires), a great front office, an outstanding scouting department, and close ties to the Jones family to move on to a rebuilding project?

The answer is: He wouldn't, not in a million years.

Don't worry, JG will be our head coach for many years and the Cowboys will become the all-time greatest NFL franchise in history.

All we gotta do is make it to the Super Bowl...By the time Super Bowl weekend is over all the Head Coaches will pretty much be signed and getting ready to scout the College talent. That will save us one year.:starspin:starspin

I'm pretty sure we can nix anything but hc by making him asst. hc and of course throwing some $$$ at him because of the promotion. Really the Cowboys are going to have $$$$$$$$$from the new stadium to throw around, they'll need some for Romo and we have two new number ones next year. I also want to go on record as saying we ought to keep JJ unless somebody overpays him. He has been ok and we have such chemistry. And for those clamoring for Barber one of the reasons he's so good is we don't run him into the ground like the Oilers did Earl. It really rpolongs their career and plus it cuts down on the injuries hopefully..
