How Low Can Garrett Go?

Jason Garrett is entering his 8th full season as Cowboys HC, with 2 playoff appearances and 1 wildcard win to show for it, and coming off a 9-7/no postseason year.

Assuming NO catastrophic season-ending injuries to key starters OR other unforeseen player-availability issues, for which he’d likely get a pass, what’s the worst 2018 record JG might post and still keep his job?

My guess is a repeat of 9-7 (maybe), with the Joneses looking long and hard at that, but probably giving him one more chance.

What say you, fellow Zoners?

He should be out if we don't make the playoffs with no major excuses, such as injury to key players.

I have no clue. My opinion is he should have already been gone for lack of results. My gut feeling is he is so far away from the hot seat that he might as well be sitting on an ice chest. Either way, it's entertaining watching the excuses made for the guy so even if we fail to make the playoffs again, the message board will be fun to read.

1-15...but Chris Jones stubs his toe at some point so JG gets a pass. J/K

If we miss the playoffs without many key injuries, I think Stephen overrules Jerry, and JG is gone. Now if the NFC has an up year and we somehow miss the playoffs at, say, 11-5, then I'd probably change my tune.

perish the thought.
exterminate the cancer.

I wonder if they hold him accountable to the W/L record. I sometimes get the feeling they're more into the progress that his process produces.

Still I think JJ sees the irritation has almost reached the boiling point. Heck he had to shut down the team's official message board because it got so ugly. Then the dang Eagles won the SB!!!

The end is bound to be closer than it seems.

My feeling right now is, if the Cowboys underperform, the fact that they changed out the entire positional staff, plus having closed the book on Dez and Witten (big leadership loss in Witt’s case), and that there’s now a lot of questions at the WR and TE positions, suggests the Joneses might afford JG a bit of a cushion — especially if the team starts slow but then finishes strong.

Jerry has made it crystal clear that THE most important consideration regarding who will be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is Jerry’s personal comfort. Not winning.

Sure JJ would like to win, but the Jones Cartel is going to make a billion in cash, win or lose. So if the team wins, Jerry wants to be comfortable that his HC will never outshine him in the “credit” for winning.

The other key component to understand the way JJ handles his HCs is this: Jerry takes away almost all power from the HC so if things go south, he can blame the coordinators or other assistant coaches as scapegoats, not his hand picked HC. That’s why Garrett is safe despite his lack of success. Jerry wants a HC that lets him continue in his meddlesome ways that 99% of bonafide NFL HCs would never allow.

Strange as it may sound, Garrett may be the best hope we have to win anytime soon. The team has improved some in drafting and developing players. We just lack a top shelf head coach to make key in season and in game adjustments which is huge in this league. But with Jerry, Garrett is the best hope we have, because Jerry wants “his boy” that he “developed” to be his HC. Winning is just a secondary priority.

Garrett has 2-3 more years with retooled staff and overhaul in players. Only thing that may sink him is 4 or fewer wins and the team just completely falls apart.

If the players give up on him, he's definitely gone paired with a miss of the postseason.

Under .500 he's gone.
10-6 and a playoff miss he might be safe.

Since Jerry has proven he would rather be comfortable than see the team succeed, Garrett has the coolest seat in the league. We are now the Bengals of the NFC. As long as people keep putting money in Jerry's pocket, he will choose to stay comfortable by keeping a coach that is no threat to him getting all of the credit rather than hire a real coach and win and in the EXTREMELY unlikely chance we ever win a SB with Garrett it will be do to Jerry finally assembling a team to overcome his comfortable coaching hire. The book on Garrett has already been written and it is a dud.

This thread should be fun...all though I think all the Garrett bashing will be funny to look back on when were 11-5 And headed to the playoffs...

Why should injuries be an excuse at all for a coach and staff? Heck IMO if there was a serious injury and they didn't compete I would be firing someone. When Romo went down and there was no backup to actually compete is when he should have been fired.

You better define "key players" because injuries happen to every team every year. Is it just Dak and Zeke? Or do you throw in offensive lineman and linebackers?

I think the average starting O lineman in the NFL only averages 13 or 14 games a season because of injuries. If Tyron, Frederick and Martin all miss 3 games, is that reason enough to miss the playoffs?

If an NFL head coach will never lose his job if his team suffers significant injuries, that would be the most secure job in the country - with the possible exception of whoever is providing safe spaces for college campuses.

I don’t understand why this org accepts excuses for injuries. This team/organization accepts excuses for injuries, suspensions and anything else they chose to allow for a lack of success. This lack of accountability is one of the main reasons this team cannot take the next step to playoff success.
